Why isn't the SANFL as competative as the AFL...?

PostPosted: Fri Jan 29, 2010 7:04 pm

Why is there so much difference between #1 & #9...?

SANFL really has to get their act together if it want's go ahead in the 10's.....

Someone should be accountable for every SANFL team.

Who are they..?

If they don't improve, get rid of them..!

Maybe 8 teams is the way to go......

there will always be a top team & a bottom team & to compare to the afl is a bit tough seeing sanfl clubs recruit & also nuture the juniors whereas the afl franchises draft the top talented juniors in the land which is supposed to create a rotation on the ladder so premierships ''can be shared'' hence the new phrase ''window of opportunity'' which while used in the sanfl which i think is a fallacy & central proves it is a fallacy as they recruit wisely & the players from 1-35 are well drilled & know their role & play it to perfection

Err...

A draft system perhaps???

This would mean that Centrals (the richest club) wouldn't be able to recruit the best interstate players... call me crazy!!!

If you did that you'd scare a lot of potential interstate recruits away.

Jusy imagine, Player X lives in Melbourne, is close to his family, is willing to give that up to play for SANFL Club "Z" who are a genuine chance of playing finals, will help him secure employment and can offer his $XXX a league game.

Instead player X has to nom, inate for the SANFL draft, gets selected by Club "D" who might be able to find someone who can employee him, and can only pay 60% a game that club "Z" have offered.

Will he cross the border?, highly unlikely

Our recruiting success has nothing to do with money,

Had you heard of these bloke before they came over to Centrals
-Chad O'Sullivan
-James Gowans
-Chris Gowans
-Andrew Hayes
-Trent Goodrem
-Jason MacKenzie

There all blokes who we have recruited (the first3 from interstate) and were no means lured over here by money, they were no names with lots of potential we scouted out as possible good players who looked like they would come over hear for the long haul. I can guareentee there are rank players at other SANFL clubs on alot more coin than these blokes.

And to say it's only a interstate recruits is just a myth from the grand final team last we had 7 interstate players.
-I.Callinan
-C.O'Sullivan
-C.Gowans
-J.Gowans
-T.Goodrem
-A.Hayes

If you went through the stats last season most teams would have fielded at least 7 interstate players a game.

Where do you think that Ryan Williams and Lee Spurr came from?

I'm amazed someone could suggest the AFL is more competitive than any other comp, let alone the SANFL.
Tell me Dog_ger, since the final eight system(s), how many times have:
o 5-6-7-8 beaten a higher ranked opponent?
o 5-6-7-8 won a flag (round this to the nearest 0%)?
o there been even close matches where teams 7-8 have been involved!

yeah sorry forgot about them, in saying that Williams wasn't a recruit as such we got him in the mini-draft and things went well enough that he stayed on when de-listed.

Still over half the team are from South Australia so i still believe the statement "This would mean that Centrals (the richest club) wouldn't be able to recruit the best interstate players... call me crazy" is totally incorrect.

Crows 98 from 5 (only one I think)

Crows 3 times in 98 finals series, and there are a few others

Clubs still have to be able to work out who the best players are. There would be slight differences in the requirements the clubs look for. Maybe Centrals just have a better record of that at the moment (well the last ten years) :D .

Putting players into a draft when one club has done all the hard work picking the player and getting them interested in coming over is nonsense.

How many other clubs even looked at Spurr, Williams, Goodrem, Hayes, O'Sullivan. At least one club knocked back the Gowans boys

It also helps if the players stay. The imports mentioned above have all been here at least three years. The Gowans boys are a huge part of what has happened the last ten years

I reckon if you looked at the top three credentialled recruits prior to starting at their new clubs Centrals wouldn't figure too high (i.e. not including players returning to their clubs).

2009: Birss, Mills, Ackland
2008: Doyle, Trotter, Perrie, Cheep (judging by how much the Eagles fans went on about him)
2007: Cupido, B Kane, Prendergast Hargraves

This year arguably Eagles have the highest profile recruit, in Welsh followed by Sturt with Giles and Bays with Tennace.

So IMO Centrals don't recruit the best players, they target specific players who will fill a role and or get their old players back from the AFL.

Good post, AB.

I think Central outspent other clubs early on to build their team and, IMO, were mega-dollars over the cap. However, that meant they were able to just 'top-up'' nicely after that, as you say, so good luck to them.

PS: Off topic, I know, but I presume from your signature, you're now pushing the republican cause ;)

So it's as I suspected, Zathrus. No more competitive than the SANFL.
1998 was quite the quirk then - Cows won their GF from 5th (albeit '5 of 8'), Port Adelaide beat Sturt in the GF coming from 5th ('5 of 5'). Port therefore had to beat a higher ranked opponent in all four matches, as with Norwood in 1984.

I'd say overall the SANFL is more competitive* than the AFL in percentage terms relating to finals, and no different i breadth of capability from the top team to the bottom team...

ST...

* from 2000 to 2009 inclusive, six SANFL teams (67%) have played in a Grand Final. Not a bad % of SANFL fans covered in the decade. Interestingly we have had four different teams playing Centrals in the last four (Eagles, North, Glenelg & Sturt). I suspect that would have been rare in both the Sturt and Port dominant eras - cue Spelly)...

That's a good little stat there ST and will be good to see spellys response.

Agree great post AB thats exactly what i was trying to get across but you worded it perfectly. Once again thought red & black i don't think we did spend mega dollars over the salary cap to build the team.

2000 was the year this all started ill go through the interstate players in that side

-Danny Hulm- was recruited ain the mid 90's by no means was a name player
-Chris and James Gowans- once again only played a couple of AFL games between them, they weren't exactly superstar AFL players, other SANFL clubs knocked them back
-Marco Bello- Came over as a young lad who missed out on the AFL draft, most people would not have ever heard of him before that
-Radlee Moller- recruited from country Sydney, im sure there was no bidding war there
-Heath Hopwood- ditto played 70+ reserves throughout his career
-Kynan Ford- was only ever an average VFL player but Jonas knew had could play a role, wouldn't have been earning bucketloads of cash
-Michael Stevens & Brent Guerra- picked up through AFL mini draft

That 2000 side was based around the local talent such as Healy, Dew, Steinberner, Slade, Graham, Hicks, MacGowan, Arnold and co.

People tend to only remember how good these player ended up, not how good or where they came from before the Dogs.

In honestly the only two big name recruits Central have had in the last decade would be Arnott and Callinan. Every other recruit has been a virtual unknown or a junior player coming back.

We know the wheel turns the club lived it for the first 35 years. My point is the statement that Central are only great is because they are rich and can recruit all the best interstate recruits is very innacurate and no where near being a true reflection of why the club has come to be so successful.
