Rushed Behinds - are they becoming more frequent?

Postby spell_check » Sat Jan 02, 2010 5:02 pm

Over the past 10 seasons (except 2004, where I only have Eagles, Norwood and Sturt compiled at the moment), this is the yearly tally of rushed behinds compared to the total number of behinds scored:

Year Behinds Rushed %
2000 2203 371 16.84
2001 2027 323 15.93
2002 2050 377 18.39
2003 2042 362 17.73
2004 1951 331 16.97
2005 2181 351 16.09
2006 2297 371 16.15
2007 2118 341 16.10
2008 2072 371 17.91
2009 2015 323 16.03

This is the average number of rushed behinds per team, per match:
Year Avg
2000 1.93
2001 1.68
2002 1.96
2003 1.93
2004 1.76
2005 1.83
2006 1.93
2007 1.78
2008 1.93
2009 1.68

Now the reason for this topic is because I thought I recall someone saying the SANFL are bringing in the AFL "Joel Bowden rule".

Looking at those figures, why should they?

Interesting Spelly.

1. How come we don't play under National Rules...?

2. Does our game suffer because of this...?

Id like to see the removal of point posts full stop. Why reward a team for missing?

The new rule worked very well in the AFL this season and it's a real improvement to the game IMO. So I'd support it coming into the SANFL regardless of whether the stats warrant it simply because I think it's a good rule.

Also, I think it's such a different approach to last line defence that I think SANFL players would suffer when they play AFL if they haven't played under that new rule before. This would more affect those players interchanging between comps during the season I guess. One rule one week, a different one the next is not ideal.

I don't think we need to copy every AFL rule BTW - but I think we should adopt this one.

How are the Bays going to win another game if we do that?

Any rule that makes Hawthorn drop out of the finals and Geelong win another flag gets my vote! :finga:
I reckon it would suit Nick Gill too as he tends to either miss by 50 metres or put it straight through the middle! :D
In all seriousness the thing I'd like to see the most is have it like all other sports when its play on if it bounces back in off the post or give it a goal or a point if it grazes the post depending on which side it goes in. Only failing to this is the fact someone may be having a shot after the siren and need a point to win and are better off missing by a lot than hitting the post, Im not sure how that one could be accounted for.

im not one for change that much ;) but i would support this type of rule change....but maybe only modified slightly...for instance, you cant do a rushed behind, but you can only do 1 in a row (so as to avoid simply wasting time but rushing points etc) or have a limit of rushed behinds per qtr to use etc....might be hard to keep track of but overall, i wouldnt be pissed off if this rule was implemented outright ala the AwFL.

That's not a bad suggestion as the big issue with some (mainly Hawthorn in the AFL) was if they couldn't find a target when kicking out they'd just walk it back through for another one, would be very easy to police. Minimal change, I like it,well done! :D

If we get rid of the point posts we would end up with more draws in our game.

I don't think the issue of Rushed Behinds isn't as big an issue in the SANFL, IMO.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Rushby Hinds hasn't posted here in ages. Surely this means he's become less frequent?

I was about to suggest keeping the point posts and adding a horizontal bar as for Gaelic Football.

Yes it takes talent. But it has nothing to do with our game. It would become more like soccer if we were to implement that.

Rushed behind rule im all for. Changing the posts, scoring system im not!

The rushed behind rule is awesome it makes the game better by putting more pressure on a player figuring out whatto do... but there is noway that we would ever get rid of point posts. its part of aussie rules and it always will be.
