i'd presume that's why they're having this urgent meeting tonight

It will be a good thing if handled correctly. Only fair the Magpies are making the dosh over the bar and through the pokies on match days (assuming it's true that the Power are keeping the lot).
A broke Port Adelaide is no good for anyone.

So did Port Power make a loss today?
Why would Port magpies go in with the merge when Port Power needs Help from the AFL and the Sanfl?

I'm not sure the other 8 clubs would agree to the merger

I would agree to the merger on one condition the magpies leave the SANFL

They made a pretty big loss but it came out as a surplus with the money pumped into them by the SANFL.

it might not matter what the other SANFL clubs want...
the big brother (AFL) might decide to overrule and push this development on the proviso that a solid business plan is put in place!
what the AFL wants it gets...

I don't mind if they merge in some areas, membership etc, but if it starts to become a Power reserves team or the Maggies start using the Powers training facs then they can both fold tomorrow, I couldn't give an arse hair for their combined 278 years of tradition. Basically it would mean that they tried to **** up the SANFL for their own designs once and they'd be doing it all again. Bed-make it-sleep in it

The merger, on my understanding, will be for the off field only. Admin, marketing etc will be under the control of one group. This cutting up to $500k pretty quickly from the combined expenses. ( Wages etc )
I maybe incorrect, but the on field will stay as is.

Sounds like a good and smart idea to me.

Firstly the SANAFL needs a healthy competitive Port Adelaide.
Port folding is not an option and will not help, in fact will weaken the other clubs.
Not sure how merging two clubs making losses will help but I guess sharing facilities will help.
Who is helping who ? How will they generate a profit ?
As Doug Thomas once said .....50% of nothing is still nothing.

How so? I would have thought any competition, of any sport, anywhere in the world needs one of its oldest and most successful clubs to remain part of the competition.
Many people argue Centrals success in the post-AFL era is somewhat tainted compared to Port and Sturts successful era's of the past, so would not a SANFL without Port Adelaide further impact on the overall standing of the comp?

As Doug Thomas once said .....50% of nothing is still nothing.
To his credit Doug Thomas has made a donation to Port Adelaide Magpies , not as a West Adelaide official, but as a concerned former player who wants to help secure the Magpies future

Here's one from left field. IF the Power & Magpies can combine a few of their facets whatever they may be, what's to stop other AFL teams seeing this as an opportunity to get into the SA market and approach other SANFL teams to run in a partnership as well.
Are Magpies & Power supposed different clubs ?
So what could stop Essendon making an approach to Westies and offering to look after some off their off field areas and in return open up a revenue base in SA ?
This would allow Essendon to have a team in the VFL, have ties with a NSW AFL team ( North Shores ), and ties with a SANFL team. Pretty handy having 3 states tied up one would think (not sure if they have a NT team nor a WA team already).

Similarly, the Western Bulldogs could link up with Central, considering they (Footscray in the VFL at the time) were the club's patron in 1960 and donated jumpers, shorts and socks to help out.
