North Gambier appoints new coach

Posted on December 14, 2009, 6:06pm and updated on December 14, 2009 at 7:24 pm

North Gambier has signed former Glenelg full forward Justin McConnell as its new on-field leader.

North president Peter Allen formally announced McConnell as the club’s new coach today and said the Tigers were ready to move forward.

North finished third in the Western Border Football League this season after bowing out in the preliminary final to eventual premiers, South Gambier.

McConnell, 28, comes to North Gambier with a solid football reputation and high credentials.

He replaces Mark Tyrrell, who coached North for two seasons before returning to Darwin.

Solid reputation and high credentials? There's another Justin McConnel? Or are they talking about the solid reputation of being soft and lazy and the high credentials gained in Glenelg's reserves finals?

I assume they have placed a clause in his contract that ensures he will put in 100% effort each and every week?

Considering he's got his level 2 Coaching, his coaching credentials are fine. Runner up in a Liston, VFL Best & Fairest, State team rep, leading goal kicker for Glenelg, Reserves premiership player, excellent results from the Glenelg underage program which he plays a massive part in, I'd say he'd be fine. His reputation & credentials would be far better then a keyboard warrior like yourself.....

And you'd know he didn't put in every week hey Boon ?

McConnell was good early in the season for Glenelg.

well played SJABC...

How quickly people forget he kicked 64 goals in 2007 as the most dangerous small forward in the league

Dutchy, without being rude, that's because you're only as good as your last game.

Dont rate Bradman then?

Macca's last game was a GF win

Comparing Bradman to McConnell?

McConnell came here to play league football, not win reserves premierships.
His last games in the league side will be remembered by most of us. Not his reserves performances (although, I'm sure supporters of Glenelg will remember those and fair enough too).

All of this is not to say he won't be an asset in the SE comp.

No you made the analogy

We all know Macca struggled this year but dont be so quick to dismiss his achievements while at the Bay, he gave us fools on the hill tremendous thrills over the years, particularly as we sponsored him.

For those interested SJABC has done a fantastic interview with him on Snouts, a great read about his story....

I'm not dismissing his performance over the years. He did have a good year in '07.
But his performance this year at the business end was poor.
Deny that if you wish.

How did I compare McConnell to Bradman?

ive ackowledged this year was poor

Only as good as your last game....if you take that analogy, Bradman was useless

No, not at all.
If Bradman was looking to continue his test career after that innings and his ongoing form had been poor - you could use that analogy.
Bradman was retiring from internationals after Hollies got 'im. However, he did go on to score three centuries in his final three first class digs in England after that.
He scored further first class hundreds after that - including in his Testimonial.
In 1963, Bradman played one more innings, in the Prime Minister's XI. He scored four.
If he'd chosen that moment as a launching pad for one more return to first class cricket, you'd say "c'mon Don, you're only as good as your last match and that was a shocker".

McConnell had one good season, as you pointed out it was 07, in the past three.
I don't think his performances at any level of football stand up to any sort of comparison, by using my analogy of "you're only as good as your last game", to The Don.

Seriously - this is the weirdness of internet discussion groups....discussing the merits of McConnell to Bradman....bizarre.
