Would you like summer footy ?

Are you having withdrawal symptoms ?
Would you like to see some form of Summer Season Competition ?
If so, what form should it take? Day or night? Weekend or weekday?

As long as it stays away from Xmas & New Year, I could live with any incarnation of the game.
Maybe just a limited ‘round robin’ or knock-out competition.
Perhaps a divisional system, including all amateur clubs, where each summer, those promoted or
relegated resume playing in that division again the following year. Good incentive through shame?
If it’s not possible to include all SANFL clubs, why not some like-minded interstate, country or
suburban teams? ETSA Park has a fantastic summer night netball season with teams from all over
the place competing. Why not footy?

I’d be quite happy to attend ‘friendly games’ between my club and the various feeder clubs just
within our zone. Maybe one of the off-season training nights could be dedicated to an inter or
intra suburban competition. Surely coaches could find value in putting their players under game
pressure to fine tune positions and game plans before the real season starts. Amateurs would get
valuable experience against league players and league clubs would get a good look at local
talent, while building good relations within their zone. Recruitment becomes a 2 way street.
Heaven knows, there are some clubs that could use the chance to re-establish positive local
links. (G’day Panthers)

Personally, I’d like to see any competition played at night. Adelaide’s weather during those long
balmy summer nights is just too good to waste. Maybe all games, in a much shorter format,
could be played at the same venue, on the same night, each week or fortnight, to maximise crowds.
Adelaide Oval perhaps?

Obviously it would have to be well promoted and not too expensive. But who could stay away
from cold beer on a warm night? With barbies sizzling and new recruits out there fighting for a
regular spot. Allowing eskies might be the secret to success too. When you think about shivering
on those horrible cold, wet and windy winter days mid year, maybe we should just swap the lot !
Or maybe, just maybe, it’s time to forget about an SANFL summer night competition and start a
whole new independent Summer Night Football League !
Today Adelaide …..Tomorrow the world ….BWHA HA HA HA HA !!!
Sorry. Got carried away there. Must keep telling myself… “My real name is not Adolf.”
“I do not have a small square moustache and I have no plans to invade Poland.”

Victoria perhaps, but not Poland.
;)

I voted no - agree the off-season is a bit slow but we need it to build up the anticipation for next season.

Please no more footy of any kind :? ......... then again if it replaces double page spreads on Stephen Triggs knee  in the press during the off-season or the mandatory " we cant believe he was not taken when we got the chance "post draft stories maybe I should re-consider.Surely the John Reid 8 page spread and poster series cant be too far away come to think of it.

I think they should promote the Northern Territory footy more and give it air time on ABC2 as they once did to give us our footy fix over summer, their matches are of a good standard and its well worth a look and you usually see some familiar faces from the SANFL along with some that would be well worth getting recruited into your side!

Summer footy would

a) Dilute the anticipation for the real stuff in winter

b) Be unlikely to be taken seriously by the clubs, in terms of allowing all players on list to front

c) Be a potential minefield of problems with players getting dehydrated etc.

I voted yes.

Cant wait for NT footy to start. I've been watching the indigenous lightning carnival they have on foxtel at the moment, so cant wait till footys back next year.
Maybe we should have a countdown timer to show how long to go.

It's a winter sport (supposedly). I'm sure I had some more in depth reason for voting no.

I voted yes.

I wouldnt mind seeing it played like a FA Cup (soccer) tournament. But only the metro teams that are in a SANFL Zone to be included because travel time and logistics would be a nightmare. Have the 9 Divisions. 2x15min halves. Monday arvo's round 6ish. Maybe 2 games a week so you could still have the time off to have an off season.

Fixtures could be like this.

Rounds 1 and 2:
Amateur teams to play against a randomly selected team from their zone. (Winners progress, losers knocked out)

Round 3 and 4:
Teams that are still in start playing against different zones. Again, randomly selected. (Winners progress, losers knocked out)

Round 5:
SANFL teams to be included. No AFL listed players are allowed to play. All teams still involved to play against a randomly selected team. (Winners progress, losers knocked out)

and so forth until 2 teams are left. Im unsure how many teams would be included so this is just a rough idea on what id like to see.

As someone who has umpired and played junior footy up there, the NTFL is massively over-rated. Don't get me wrong it has its own distinctive style but it aint that great. Would be no substitute for SANFL for me.

The play footy all year round in the Western NT (Tanami Desert) in winter they play in the Alice Springs competition, over summer communities like Yuendumu, Papunya, Mt Liebig, Mt Allen, Lajamanu play amongst themselves in 45 degree heat.... Mad.

There is also the Katherine League and the Gove league too at this time of year.

No, no no!

It's cricket season. Deal with it...

Seriously, footy takes up a fair old wedge of the year as is. Absence makes the heart grow fond and all that, if it was here all the time it would lose some of its value.
