i believe that matthew slade has retired from league footy after todays premiership win (well the sanfl site says he has), a very skilled & determined player the jockey sized number 59

enjoy your retirement & the schoolyard

ps, he was always good for a 'chat over the fence'  ;)

Matt was the replacement for Scott 'tater' Lee in the 2000 Finals series, and GF in particular.
Did, and has done, CDFC proud ever since.

8 medals later, go you good thing Sladey!

Well done matty Slade on a fantastic career!
Apparently he is having a year off and then he will consider the prospect of becoming a coach.
I think the Central District dynasty will be responsible for quite a few new coaches in the future!

A legend of Central and the SANFL. One of my favourite players for Central since he debuted. Fantastic ticker, strong as an ox and a ferocious tackler plys dangerous when on the burst forward of centre often kicking many goals. Congrats on a great career, definitely will be one for the coaches box, smart head.

Matty Slade,a guy you could always rely on,as strong as an ox,never took a backward step, loyal to his club, stood up when counted.
Captain courageous,8 time premiership player, always respected.
A huge loss for our playing group,a huge part of our success,on ya Sladey,a credit to himself ,a true Bulldog through and through. 8) 8)

would have won a Magarey in 2004? except for a white-tailed spider bite, making him miss about 6 or 7 games. LEGEND.

Would have been great for the Doggies to have joint Magarey Medalists from the same club in 2004, didn't Paul Thomas only pip Slade by the 1 vote ?

It was close between 4 blokes IIRC. Slade and a couple of Eagles players were just behind, all within a game of each other I thought. Slade was burning for the first 10 rounds that year, and who knows what could have been if he'd managed to avoid that spider. But regardless of any lack of magarey medals, a B&F in a premiership year, triple (I think) premiership captain and 8 flags in over 200 games is a record to rival any in the history of this comp. His presence on and off the field will be missed but the club as ever goes onwards and upwards. Hope he manages to stay involved with footy and even better retains his ties with the club. Good people are always in demand, and he is one of the greatest.

Humourous even.

Although I thought Thommo's quip that he doesn't "leave the Northern suburbs very often" was call of the day.
