Qualification Rule for SANFL Finals

I am trying to seek a Little clarification around the rules regarding AFL listed players playing for their SANFL clubs during finals - my understanding is that the player in question must have played at least 3 games for their club during minor round and that may be at either League or Reserves level but if the player in question's AFL club is also playing finals but not required by that club he would then be ablew to play for his SANFL player regardless of whether he has played 3 games or not.

Is this correct ?

If Adelaide were to lose to Collingwood on Saturday night would Nathan Bock be able to play for Woodville West Torrens on Sunday or would he only be able to play if Adelaide won on Saturday night.

Some assistance please !!!

My understanding is if Adelaide win Bock is then available, if the Crows happen to lose Saturday night their season is over and Bock hasn't qualified with the 3 games so he will be unavailable.

The three match rule also includes matches played with the lowest ranked reserves club should the team the player is aligned with has the bye.

It has been discussed and answered a couple of times in these 2 threads...

But essentially, as whufc pointed out, Bock can ONLY play for the Eagles (having not played the minimum 3 game qualification) provided the Crows are still participating in the AFL finals.

Crows lose Saturday night, their season is over and Bock WILL NOT play for the Eagles Sunday.

Crows win Saturday night and Bock is not selected in the Adelaide line-up, he WILL play for the Eagles Sunday.

Yes, this is the case. And it has been discussed plenty before.

i think its incorrect here lads.

It is to do with the weekends matches not if crows lose on the saturday night.

So if Bock is not selected for this game for the crows, he is available for the eagles. If crows lose saturday night he is still available on the sunday but if the eagles win, bock will not be able to play any further part for the eagles after that weekend.

The day of the game does not come into it.

I doubt that. If the Crows lose, the fact is he has not played 3 games...those are the rules as far as I can see.

The point about Bock POSSIBLY playing for the Eagles is based on fact the Crows would be taking a punt with their decision. Play him for the Crows and his lack of mathc fitness is found out, could play some part in the result going against Adelaide.

Take the risk assuming the Crows SHOUDL win the game, give Bocky a run in the SANFL to get match fitness and form and then he'd be right to go against Geelong in a prelim. I can not see any logic in the Crows wanting to play Bock at SANFL level for 1 final if they lose the game against Collingwood.

If this is the case, their season is over so they will achieve nothing and risk further injury by playing Bock for the Eagles the next day.

Put simply, if Nathan Bock is passed fit to play football this weekend and isn't selected for the Crows then they lose the game to Collingwood, then I guarantee the AFL All-Australian Centre Half Back will NOT be playing for the Eagles on Sunday.

So yes, in actual fact, the day of the game (from the Crows perspective) does come into it, but of course the emphasis shoule be that either way the Adelalaide FC are taking a risk, the safest bet is letting him play SANFL SHOULD they get through this week.

The MAIN point that should be understood is that the Crows will again POSSIBLY use the SANFL to it's advantage for the sole purpose of giving one of their employees an opportunity to find some match fitness.

One more time, for thos e that don't understand...

CROWS LOSE, SEASON OVER (without selecting Bock for AFL duties) = HE DOES NOT PLAY FOR THE EAGLES SUNDAY, THERE IS NO NEED.

CROWS WIN PLAY PRELIM, (without selecting Bock for AFL duties) = HE DOES PLAY FOR THE EAGLES SUNDAY TO FIND MATCH FITNESS.

Sorry, I still find that scenario ridiculous. There is a rule in place and it should be 3 games..He can play reserves for whoever for "match fitness"...Don't forget, we collectively OWN the Crows' AFL license!

Just think of it like the scenario with a team's league and reserves sides. During the finals, if both teams are in the finals, then players can be selected freely for either team. Once the league side is eliminated from the finals (and the reserves are still alive), then league players can no longer be selected in the reserves side.

The only difference between SA AFL sides and the SANFL is there is the additional 3 game rule for AFL listed players to allow them to play SANFL finals once their corresponding AFL team has been eliminated from the finals race.

And further from that, there is a clause that states whilst an AFL club is still alive in finals, regardless of whether one of their listed players has played the minimum 3 games, he can still play in the SANFL finals series if the AFL club considers this player to still be in their selection mix. Yes, essentially, the SANFL is the 'reserves' of the 2 x Adelaide based AFL clubs (even though us die hard SANFL fans see it otherwise) but put simply, the Crows aren't bending any rules or do anything wrong in theory.

Whilst it doesn't seem fair or right, they are well within their rights to play Bock Sunday, once again, provided they don't select him for the Collingwood game and Adelaide still win. I personally think they wont risk him in the Adelaide line up, the Crows will defeat Collingwood, Bock will play for the Eagles Sunday and help them beat North, then Bock will be back in the Adelaide line-up the following week for the Preliminary Final against Geelong and this will all be a thing of the past before you know it.

BP it may soon be a thing of the past but if the Eagles/North game is close and Bock plays well and is the difference then North supporters may well consider themselves as unlucky!

Not real fussed as according to the Eagles fans and most others they've already won anyway.
Its not like it would be a first as Fergus Watts won a final off his own boot against us but to be fair Nathan Lonie did virtually the same thing against the Eagles too.

I guess while this rule may well influence the results of a final, it can't influence a GF as Bock will not be eligible even if the Crows make the AFL GF.

Some very good points here, however it looks like it won't be relevant for this weekend - but it is an interesting topic nonetheless.

Technically, the time of game on the weekend does not matter - Bock would be eligible to play for the Eagles on Sunday even if the Crows lost on Saturday night.

If the Crows were to lose on Saturday night, there would be a number of things to consider:
1. Would the Eagles want Bock to play, given that:
a) he knows it is his last game for the year and may not be completely committed
b) they can't use him later in the finals so they would need to decide whether they want a settled lineup (choose the person that will potentially come into the team the following week), or have their best team (assuming that Bock is committed to playing)
2. Would the Crows want Bock to play, given that:
a) The only thing to gain is further injury to their player, but
b) Withdrawing a player shortly before game time after releasing him to play for the Eagles could potentially further strain relationships between AFL and SANFL teams.
3. Would Bock want to play, given that:
a) He knows it is his last game for the season, or
b) He can help his SANFL team progress further in the finals

Regarding (3), I would think there are some AFL players who would love to have the opportunity to help their SANFL team achieve further success, but others who only see it as just playing a game of footy whilst they are out of their AFL team.
