Apologies if it's been mentioned already in Footy SA but heard a rumour on the weekend about a possible merger of 2 teams in the SANFL.

Has anyone else heard about the Ethelton & Richmond boys becoming one ?

About 2 months ago a former Westies star told me of this rumour, but personally I think it is rubbish.

At least my mate who said he would become Westies fan if/when PAMFC folded will be half happy!

Probably the two most logical clubs to merge you would think. They have a pretty close history and are geographically ideal for a merger.

Would be sad to see any clubs merging, but better than losing one or both completely and Port just seem to be closer and closer to the brink. Not sure a new coach is going to do anything but take them further back. West have improved this year but being so poor for 4 or so seasons must show things aren't brilliant down there.

8 Teams would allow 21 rounds - play everyone 3 times. Much fairer!

Westies certainly have a strong financial base but struggle with cashflow, Port struggle with both, but with Westies Balance Sheet pretty solid it would make sense, hand Alberton to PAP's and play 3-4 games there but base the team at Richmond. No distruption with cricket/AFL it would be the ideal base and a ground that is underutlised IMO, it could fit 10k and is close to town.

End of the day it would be very tough to do but maybe witht he support of everyone it could be done, use the Williams family who have links between both clubs to be ambassadors for it?

Would have to get rid of "Port" IMO so maybe the Western Magpies?

I'm sure West will merge if they're called West Adelaide, play in red and black and have Richmond Oval as their home.

Port might merge with someone, but it won't be Westies.

I think a merger between the two would be great. That way Port Power could claim 45 premierships.

Port and West to merge....? dont think it will happen. If it does their combined area would be huge geographically and population wise. Perhaps South could regain some of the area it surrendered to West in Reynella, Aberfoyle Park and Flagstaff Hill? :?

If it did happen I would think that there would be a major redistribution of boundaries so that each club got aprox 1/8th of the total.
