Security at SANFL Football grounds

I have a concern over an aspect of security at what happened at Prospect Oval NA V GL game
The game finished
I was walking out of the ground and stopped as the boundary umpires ran off the field
Security stopped the crowd to allow the Umps to go to the changerooms

I walked a bit further and waited to where the GL players were to progress thru the crowd to the changerooms
After about 2-3 minutes later 2 GL players made thier way through the crowd
About 2-5 minutes later the rest of the GL players made thier way off the ground
At no stage was there any security in the vicinty of the offgoing GL players
The security were still congregated at the door of where the umpires where.[about 50mtrs away]

I have been informed after a 2nd siren is sounded at SANFL games that no security will be made available for the players
If the players stay out on the ground too long they are afforded no security

I am in this post not implicating If its a directive of the security firm, the NAFC, or the SANFL or whoever to what proceedures take place

The point I am making is that there was no security for the GL players coming off the ground
In my opinion that sets a dangerous precedent
I and many others would have had the opportunity to perhaps have an altercation with the GL players

FOOTNOTE
There is always the possibilty of players being subjected to altercations at various stages
???? This season a NA player had a prob with a PA spectator at Prospect at 3/4 time [???only what Ive heard]
This season we also had a CD player in a incident at Richmond Oval ???
Many times at the Parade over the years I have seen players spat on and abused when leaving the players race after a game
At all grounds there is a potential for these player/spectator incidences

SUMMARY
I now know there is a 2 siren warning for the SANFL teams to get off the crowd etc etc
But within what I reckon was approximately 10 minutes of a game finishing to have no security for the GL players is ??????

I'm with you Thiele, Prospect is an out of control cesspool of violence.
I think we should look at getting the riot squad in for visitors there.
Bless the sweet baby jesus that Glenelg got out of there alive. It's a miracle!
I hope everybody prays this weeks for the safety of the poor Central lads who have to go there this week. I know I will.
Nothing's happened yet in 80 years of games there but surely its just a matter of time.

I know mate, I'm more up in arms than you are.
I hope the officials are carrying semi automatic weapons at the very least. They do a marvellous job of protecting those players, I applaud them.
Rumour has it the man who does the Rocket Rooster frequents the Cricket Club, if he got angry he might throw a tail feather or something and have someone's eye out.
I really am concerned mate, perhaps we could organise a petition, a rally, God, anything that can get the public awareness happening.
BEFORE ITS TOO LATE!!

I have been at two grounds in the last two years where a team walking off after a fair flogging had supporters barge through them luckily with no reaction by the players (apart from dirty looks by players) however the potential was/is there --- I expressed concern then and still have them.

I agree, but unfortunately we have too many people on this forum who think their opinions are all that matter and have no regard for anyone else's.

This is supposed to be a FORUM, and that means a free exchange of ideas and opinions. It would be nice for some people to learn how to debate a point without personal abuse.

Thiele, I don't think bluegirl2002 was referring to you.

Is Prospect the only Oval with out a player race / tunnel / fenced off area for players to get on/off the ground ?

Sorry Thiele-the response was definitely not directed at you.

At Noarlunga the players walk across an area about 2 metres wide between the "players race" and the boundary fence, but that is manned by security of some description, not necessarily official. At Oval Avenue the home team runs from the rooms to the oval across a similar distance but it is fenced by swinging the boundary gates in the opposite direction and is usually manned by a couple of club officials. There is no protection from anything thrown from the crowd at either of these venues.

Pretty sure their is a gate at South too that swings across. Can't do much about thrown objects at any venue if you're a good shot....

I cant verify if nothings happened at Prospect for 80 years, I will take your word for it
BUT this happened less than 80 years ago

In 1954, the Magpies beat Westies by 3 points in a controversial game
At half time, West Adelaide held a 25 point lead but a brawl broke out on the sounding of the half time siren.
On the way to the change rooms some West Adelaide players were set upon by members of the public.
This rattled the Red and Blacks and Port drew within 2 points at the final change.
With 3 minutes left in the game, Jimmy 'silent' Wright had a shot to win the game but it hit the post and Port won.
_______________________________________________________________________________
As a result of the half time brawl, the players race was introduced to SANFL football the following year

I think the Security is pretty poor not to wait 5 minutes when they were all standing near the area that the Bays left the ground.

Who is saying that it has to be opposition supporters getting stuck in to players. I have seen this year at Norwood after we gave them a hiding the Norwood fans abusing the players and then the coaching staff. A few to many beers and a loyal supporter can become over excitied by the situation and do something stupid.

I would have thought if the players stay out on the ground until after the 2nd siren then they know the crowd will be on the ground but especially at a ground that is not fenced off the Security should be required to see the players to the change rooms safely. The Bays players would have been on the ground for maybe 5 minutes longer than North.

Answer is provide the security or put up a fence like Centrals have to keep the crowd away from the Visitors as they walk to there Rooms.

Its good to see the concern raised. I've been told Mal's fears were brought on by an injured Glenelg player hugging a Glenelg player. Without security who knows where this could have led to? A two handed handshake? A kisss? Rape? Murder?

What shall we do next mal? It was a good start putting the title thread in capitals as it really is the most important topic in the SANFL at the moment and really does need to be shouted, I commend you on that.

I might ring up Leon Byrner. I encourage all to do what they can. The poor Central's lads this coming Saturday are at risk and we have time to help.

I'm worried about the security of the crowd if the get too close to Glenelg players. You don't know what diseases they could be carrying

They were only hugging on Sunday. ;)
