Rnd 20 - Sturt v West @ Unley Preview (Sat 15/8)

After coming off a bye (and a comfy win against North the week before) the Double Blues face the most improved team in the SANFL this year, West Adelaide, at Unley Oval.
When these 2 sides met back in round 3 at the same venue, the Bloods got off to a great start but were unable to sustain it for 4 quarters. Many will say this is one thing they have improved on this year and they will certainly need to show this against Sturt on the weekend.
The Double Blues should be too strong for Andy Collins' men, and on their home deck, think Sturt will win by 4-5 goals.

This is the time for the Bloods to stand up if they are going to be a serious finals contender.
Form says the Blues, but if West can steal this one then North will be under enormous pressure to hold down 5th spot.
Will hopefully be a good close game.

This is going to be an absolute cracker imo.
As dedja said this will be the game that announces West Adelaide as a serious finals contender, which I think they can be.
Even if Westies don't win, to get within a couple of goals of Sturt would be a massive step.

This is the one team that always pumps us. Given last time they had Brent Reilly and Brodie Martin cruising around the midfield. Still not very confident at all!

I can't see us getting within 10 goals of Sturt, their game plan is one we just can't seem to cope with and it has been that way for a long time. I hope i am wrong but i just can't see much changing against this side. We seem to match up well enough against all others just not this mob for some reason.

Might be a game well worth having a look at this Saturday.
Given that I am currently at home in isolation dagnosed with Swine flu, I might put on my old Sturt tracksuit (circa 1999) and wonder through the rooms pre game. Catch up with a few mates, ol Johnny Weslby, Suthers and Nick Swingler, ask "Whaddup Brus??" to Patty Fittock and Josh C whilst coughing and spitting over all and sundry given who Sturt play the following week....

I actually cant remember the last time we got within 10 goals of Sturt let alone beating them. Chambers always has a day out BUT im thinking (hoping) that will change this weekend. Im tipping an upset..West by 7points.

Brant Chambers could have a day out against West, but just needs 1 goal to crack the top 10 all time goal kickers list, as per this online Messenger story...

Sturt full forward Brant Chambers.
Picture: Stephen LafferSTURT spearhead Brant Chambers is poised to crack the SANFL’s top 10 goal kicking list of all time this weekend.
The 29-year-old is on 612 and needs just one goal to draw level with former West Torrens and Norwood forward Neville Roberts who sits in 10th place.
And if he boots seven or more goals this season he could jump as high as seventh, passing former Double Blue Malcolm Greenslade (615 career goals) and former Eagle and Rooster John Roberts (618).
``I was sort of aware that I was close (to the top 10),’’ Chambers said.
``I mean it’s definitely something to be proud of and I’ll look back on it down the track, but winning is the main thing at the moment.’’
Chambers has kicked 70 goals this season a feat that appeared unlikely during summer when Sturt coach Luke Norman hinted his gun forward would spend more time up the ground.
But that hasn’t happened.
``The idea was to get me out of the square,’’ Chambers said.
``I think his (Norman) concern was that we could have been too one-dimensional.
``But we’ve worked around it, I’m still at full forward and I’m happy there.
``And if I get the attention at full forward it frees up other blokes.’’
Sturt plays West Adelaide this weekend then meets Glenelg in Round 21 which looms as a crunch game heading into the finals.
``It’s a big game, especially after the last two (against Glenelg) this year we weren’t even competitive.’’

Do you reckon you could send us some of those $. I'm sure the Dogs have plenty to throw around. You can send it in one of your famous brown paper bags and deliver it to "under Matt Bensons table"

at least you are honest there Feung. Sturt should keep on rolling and win by 7 goals. Westies will come out of the blocks but get pegged back real quick. The win for Sturt will seal 3rd spot.

A Sturt win over West will
at least seal that all important top 3 finish. If the Dogs lose to North, which I think may happen, then Sturt jump to second, before they battle fellow top 3 rivals the Bays at Unley and the Dogs at Elizabeth. Either way, it is fair to say the top 3 is settled, it is just the order to sort itself out now.

After making the trip out to Waikerie, I for one am certainly interested to see how the team responds from that game, but more importantly, what Collins has learnt.
As mentioned previously, Reilly and Martin hurt us that day, but McGlone and Coad must be paid the respect they deserve and not be allowed to peel off their man and run lose.
A big game for us, not just for the chance to jag a spot in the 5, but to see where we are at. Would love to see Sal and Cupido running around, but nevertheless, no excuses this week. Time to step up. Go Bloods. I cant remember our last win at S#^thouse Oval.

This game is going to be used to help promote the 'Close the Gap' campaign with help from Oxfam Australia and the 2 clubs.
'Sturt and West Adelaide will join together in a common cause to promote the Close the Gap campaign and call for the life expectancy gap between Aboriginal and Torres Staight Islander people and other Australians to be closed within a generation.
This is the second year Sturt has thrown their support behind this important campaign and believes it's an important part of their Clubs calendar.
By promoting the Close the Gap campaign, both clubs are showing support to their Aboriginal players, past and present, their families and their communities and they are calling on the South Australian football loving public to get behind the campaign and show their support too'.
Great work by both clubs to promote this, in particular Sturt footballer and Close the Gap Campaign representative Josh Cubillo. Hopefully Josh will be a guest on the Thursday Night League Teams Show this week on 1197am 5RPH so we will be able to hear more then about it.
