The following email was sent from the club today:

The West Adelaide Football Club wishes to inform that Salim Hassan has advised the Coaching Staff and Players that he will not be continuing to play football, effective immediately.

Sal sighted personal and motivational factors in his sudden decision to walk away from football.

The Club is really disappointed by Sal’s decision not to fulfil the remainder of his contract. Sal has been a valued member of the Club both in 2003/04 and since his return in 2008.

Sal does not wish to make any comment at this time. The Club remains focused on the remaining six games of the season.

Hope all is well with him as im totally suprised by this.

Salim Hassan soars for the footy against Central District this season

WEST Adelaide football operations manager Scott Turner said he was ``disappointed’’ by midfielder Salim Hassan’s sudden decision to quit the club this week.

The Bloods released a statement this afternoon saying Hassan had decided to walk away from football due to ``personal and motivational’’ reasons.

``We’re disappointed by the decision,’’ Turner said.

``We were keen for him to finish the season.’’

Hassan was in the final year of a two-year contract with West Adelaide.

He missed most of last season with a knee injury and did not play his first game in 2009 until Round Five.

Turner said Hassan’s return from the knee reconstruction was ``as smooth as it can be’’ and the injury did not prompt his decision to quit the club.

Turner also said he was not aware of whether Hassan intended on playing football elsewhere this season, but if he did he would require a clearance which at this stage, looked unlikely.

why ? :? :? :?

why wouldn't you play out the last few weeks of the year & then announce it ? if it is personel or he has got a 'great job' interstate then fair enough but to just 'pack your bags' is just giving up imho

Soory to hear this and a little surprised. Saw him a few times this year and felt he was at the heart of the west resurgence. If I was a west man I'd be pissed he couldn't see the year out. But you can't play footy when the passion has gone. Although evreybody sees players in their own team who would be exceptions to this from time to time. There must be a real problem to walk away at this stage in a season. I wish him well.

Gobsmacked (some would say this is a good thing, mebeing gobsmacked!).
All th effort to return, and recover from the knee - weird science.

As a neutral supporter I won't forget the events of the third quarter in the PF of 2003, and the knock he took. He wasn't 100% for the match with us the following week; nonetheless a courageous player.

I will always remember Bello cleaning him up at Richmond Oval, in front of the grandstand, the crowd went apeshit!

Really surprised at this news, I do think that Salim Hassan has been one of the players that has helped Westies to get out of their rut and to begin the club up the table! :?

Very sad to see Salim go he was a major reason for our success in 2003 and was instrumental in our efforts to climb the ladder this year, he will be sorely missed. Good luck to him in his future endeavours.

That was one of the most courageous acts i have seen from a West Adelaide Footballer in my time watching them. Stephen Hall(IIRC) cleaned him up well and truly, fairly i will add, but he wasn't 100% for the GF unfortunately, neither were a few others  .
