"Watching todays telecast between Glenelg and Centrals and i listened to Pyman's comment regarding South Adelaide at Half time....they flashed the half time scores from around the grounds and Pyman said South should amalgamate with another club, possibly Port Adelaide this will eliminate the bye. South have money, Port have none. He went on to say the league side is struggling, the B's are bottom and no decent juniors coming through the under 18's. It certainly raised the eye brows of the other commentator at the time (name eludes me just now)"

I think an amalgamation is unlikely at this stage given the coin that is coming into the club, yet I do think his point that there are few players coming through the junior ranks of the club is a valid one that should be of concern if we are to move forward.

and things are only going to get worse next year. No point in being rich if no-one wants to play for you.

i saw that this morning when i watched it...it seems to be a 'sour grapes' comment as he also said after the money comment that port have a winning culture & south has no culture (or words to that affect)
not on to say that type of comment when you are supposed to be impartial imho

I heard that comment while watching the T.V. telecast......had a chuckle over it......sour grapes??? the thing is, is that he's right!...

As an ex SAFC employee back in the media I understand the dilema.

As en example I am on the fiveaa SANFL show tonight (8pm) and have to provide some analysis and comment on the Panthers loss yesterday, their 14th in a row and one of the most disapointing ones yet.

The way I have personally worked through that issue over the last two years is to put myself in the south supporters shoes before giving an opinion, be honest and call the facts as they are, but be balanced where possible and avoid being vindictive.

That said I've got no idea what I am going to ask the South rep tonight.

How about....are the players scared of making mistakes?
.................. is to much pressure being put on them to win a game?
...................dont even mention the Pyman comment, it'll go away by itself.

How about asking a few hard questions?

- Whats does the club think of their recruits this year?
- Will Sampson be signed up for 2010?
- What does the club need for 2010?

After 16 losses, supporters are getting very tired of heaing the same old excuses. It is very hard to see any light at the end of the tunnel with all grades being at the bottom of the table. Next year, South will lose players interstate sides.

At the moment, this is our worst era since the dark days of 1988/89.

We keep hearing about positives but after seeing the game on Saturday it is very hard to see any.

No game plan, structure ....even the players seemed disinterested.

Just give us something to give us Southee's some hope for the future

He's being paid to offer an opinion and if the one he offers makes a former employer of his look bad then so be it - he is earning his money.

Better than the usual sitting on the fence crap we get form former coaches when they speak of their old employers.

Wasn't it Rod Campbell that made this comment ?

Rod has probably made the same or a similar comment in weeks gone by when he was commentating on the ABC, but this thread was in reference to Robert Pyman's comment made on the weekend gone when commentating for the Glenelg v Central game.

Your questions are fair to ask given the season .. BUT ... the rep from South is Ben Warren.

It is not fair or appropriate to ask a player some of the questions you want answered but we will cover what we can.

Maybe (Warning Sour Grape Alert) a club official should nominate themselves to come on the show, it seems that most week it is Dugga that carries the can.

point 1, reading between the lines with what brenton honor said on coast fm's sanfl segment on friday clay will be there (& so he should be)

point 2, there is light at the end of the tunnel, a very young team will have downers like yesterday from time to time in their developement & remember you haven't had a ruckman for a fair while either

point 3, there is no point in giving the coach the chop & starting again, lets face it i've seen that enough times at the bay to know that

I'm disappointed with South Adelaide's performances over the last 10-15 years. I'm sure South supporters are even more disappointed. I just don't understand how the club can continue to perform poorly season after season. I suppose as a Sturt supporter, I should maybe have some insight, as many people would ask, how can you possibly come last for 8 years in a row? Beats me, certainly were reasons behind coming last the first few years, but geez after a while it was mystifying.

That said, I tend to think that what South lacks is a culture of winning and maybe there is resistance at the club to completely overhaul things, give total control to an established coach to reinvent the place?

Its a pity the Jack Cahill (say no more) experiment went down the toilet as I really held hope that he would rejuvenate the club and bring South back into the finals. A few years making 3rd-5th may have completely turned things around. As it stands, South seem to be a lot like Richmond, where mediocre performances seem to be accepted by the club administration. I'm sure the players are trying, so one has to look at the football department and the club as a whole and ask why are things not working?

I assume these questions are raised annually at the AGM?

I for one am not a quiet member. If the club starts acting like knobs, I stand up and ask the pointed questions of the board. I would hope that South supporters are the same.

I can assure you that these questions are certainly raised from the membership to the club every AGM and at various other occasions.

Each year at the end of the season you get a "next season" letter from the SAFC stating that the plan to rejuvenate the club is underway and if we all just keep faith in the club and its plan we will reap the good result etc etc. South do generate new members who swallow this line then disappear a few years later. Other SAFC members are just so over it that they keep their membership but have nothing at all to do with the club having lost faith in it, yet retaining the membership in the hope that the club really will become competitive in the SANFL. At the last election it was rumoured that some 300 members bothered to vote, which is a real concern also.

Various people have got up at an AGM and had their say and the result is the same old same old behaviour, the losing culture is so well entrenched at South that after the club loses a match it is not uncommon to see SAFC supporters clapping the team off the ground. Jack Cahill was the first coach after John Reid to refuse to hand out "best player" awards after a thrashing and I feel that his coaching methods were seen as to tough and unfair on the players - again because of the re-inforcement of the losing culture of the club.

I do hope the current situation changes, yet considering that we are going to win the spoon this season and the fact that several players are likely to leave the club at the end of the season, I do think we may be about to enter a worse period than the late 1980's in the clubs performances, I do think the next few years will severely test a number of SAFC people, If Westies continue to improve and Norwood and Port continue their tradition of playing for the jumper when they play South, I do think we may not win a match next season which would be a watershed moment for the club if that is the case.

The interesting thing going through the archives of when Woodville and Central Districts were admitted to the competition, a vote was held to actually kick the SAFC out of the SANFL based around the poor performances and standard of the club who at that stage had not won a premiership for 30 years. Fast forward to 2009 and I do not think the SANFL would have the power to do that, yet there does seem to be no consequence for the club for its performances and perhaps that is where the problem really lies.
