SANFL games as AFL curtain raisers poll

Seems to be alot of negativity to this idea, time for a poll.

There would need to be a lot of conditions for me to consider a yes vote

As we all know they tried it a few years back now and it failed so I can`t see it changing now.

I think it's being proposed on 2 levels.
1. as a way of increasing attendances at AFL games.
2. as a way of increasing revenue and cost cutting for SANFL clubs in hosting a game of footy.

Understand the 2 points you make, but it is unfair for the regular SANFL attender to have to fork out the extra money to watch he or she`s football team play just so the AFL can maximise their attendances.
I will be buggered if I am going to pay $30 or what ever it is to go watch two games when all I will be doing is leaving after the first one.
Here`s an Idea for the AFL if you want to increase your crowds stop ripping off the public with the ridiculous entry and catering prices and start playing a better brand of football like in our comp.
AFL SORT YOUR PROBLEMS OUT, DON`T DRAG THE SANFL IN TO YOUR MESS.

Could they possibly make it that if you have a season ticket for the SANFL, you get into the AFL game free? The problem is the organised seating. What you'd have to have is SANFL fans getting given allocated seating that the must sit in when the AFL game starts, up until then, they can sit anywhere, but upon the game finishing, they'd have to move. I'm sure it'd cause problems though, you're sitting there cheering on Sturt (as we all do) and then some knob Crows supporters comes in early, oh move that's my seat, yeah yeah whatever and so we have arguments. If this could be made to work, I'd be happy with it, but somehow I think this is all for the benefit of the AFL and not the SANFL fan, we'll get screwed to somehow help them.

I'm just having a chuckle if they threw on today's Norwood v West game as a curtain raiser. Imagine trying to explain to people who came from interestate that these were two teams from the premier local competition in the state. Embarrassing.

I'll repost what I said about this at db.org:

No. no, effing no.

Back in the dark days we had a curtain raiser before a Crows game. The game was a sellout and I only wanted to go see Sturt, had to stand outside the ground asking if anyone had a spare ticket. Ended up paying full tote odds when I finally found someone with a spare and didnt get in until midway through the second. We got flogged and I went home after our game.

They're a pain in the arse. The SANFL is a stand alone comp.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

I assume they wouldn't put an SANFL game likely to get 10,000 people before the AFL game. I also assume they wouldn't do it before one of the few guaranteed packed out AFL games each season. So that leaves a lot of opportunities where there will be at least 10-20,000 spare seats where up to 4000 (?) SANFL team supporters need to be seated. Surely something can be worked out with seating in those circumstances?

I don't know the best solution but crowd numbers at Crows games aren't what they were when SANFL curtain raisers were last tried which was also before the 30,000 max Port crowds IIRC.

I've got an open mind on the idea until I see the exact details of how it will work. Then I'll judge it.

Personally we can do without it,
BUT
If this is seen and organised with a view to promote our league to a new audience (AFL fans with little to no SANFL exposure) then its not totally wiythout any benefit.

IF this was to occur
1) Season Ticket and Home Match Ticket Holders must have access to the game for no cost.
2) These ticket holders must be allocated access to the SANFL Members Area on game day (Saves issue with allocated seats)
3) Each club must be allocated some tickets (SANFL Members Guest passes) to be sold to bona fide SANFL club members at SANFL rates.
4) Time between games should be minimised
5) All SANFL Media Passes to be honoured for access to media centre
6) Should be part of a concentrated strategy where the SANFL competition is actively promoted at all AFL games at AAMI Stadium (ie ABC Highlights, Ads, Promos on Video Screens and weekly article in SA edition of AFL Football Record).
7) Should also be a promotion / competition put together to encourage those coming to the game to come into the stadium early.

I cant see any benefit whatsoever for our clubs, surely home games are profitable? How can they not be?

From an SANFL perspective the costs they allocate as putting on a game are not always covered by the gate earned on that day.

Unless it has changed in the last 18 months the game day gate receipts are pooled (home , season tickets excluded) and then divided up equally at seasons end.

Basically some matches and clubs subsidised some others

It is an interesting "arrangement" as a club makes no extra gate money if 1,400 or 3,000 turn up.

However that said they obviously make more from bar, canteen, car parking and social club post match.

Is this the best way to give clubs incentives to promote their home games??

Personally I think
1) this pooling should be reduced (ie after costs taken out 50% allocated to home club, 50%to pool)
2) clubs that dont generate enough gate to cover SANFL allocated costs should be sent a bill for the difference ...... that will get them focussed on home game promotions quick smart.
