Rivalry Round

Rivalry Round is here again - I'm a little confused with 1 match up in particular. South v Eagles - WTF :? :? :? since when have South and Eagles been rivals. Port and Norwood obviously been rivals for years now it's a given that these 2 would play each other. Central and North perhaps the 2 battling for supremacy of the north. What are your thoughts - what could be some other possible matchups.

South have little rivalry with any club, rivalries are generally earnt through contesting premierships or finals, although its not current, West Adelaide and Port Adelaide had a huge rivalry in the 1950's.

What South and the Eagles should have done is to get out the Heritage Guernseys for the round and at least make it a little colourful!

I believe that South's very first game in 1876 was against a side from Woodville.

Cant get more historic than 133 years ago.

It's as bad in the AFL. Match up the 4 biggest drawing teams and then draw the other teams out of a hat and voila suddenly South and the Eagles are rivals! Or North Melbourne & the Bulldogs ...

We should just call it what it is: Port v Norwod & Sturt v Glenelg round ;)

If it helps crowds to label a "rivalry round" then fine. But I think it's a bit lame in both the AFL and the SANFL and I wouldn't miss what I see as a token label. That's unless you can come up with a combination in which ALL games are true "rivals". But you can't. Especially in the SANFL when one team has to have a bye!

I think the biggest rivalry in SANFL is Port vs Norwood.
Sturt would have made a strong bid for a place in that combination had it not been for 8 straight years of spoons that begun a couple of decades ago.
Any of the Glenelg, Sturt, Norwood, Port combinations would make for handy rivals, but North's only obvious rival is Glenelg IMO. So the Bays should probably match up against them, then Port play Norwood and that leaves Sturt, who could easily have played against anyone of three sides suddenly left without a traditional rival.
In past years we played West on rivalry round, and I think that idea was mainly based on the 1983 Grand Final. I remember reading some other supposed historic clashes between the two sides, but it seemed a bit contrived.
Centrals vs Eagles seems like a good fit IMO.
Sorry South...

IMHO it's an unnecessary contrived theme ... Those supporters in touch with the SANFL know who their historical rivals are, and those that aren't involved with the SANFL couldn't give a rats anyway.

IF the clubs desired to see it continue, then they should select their own home game during the year and promote it as a "Rivalry Match", this would allow the 4 or 5 clubs who consider Port their biggest rivals to promote it around them v Port.

That said, the way the SANFL fixture is currently planned it would probably prevent that sometimes anyway.

Im not keen on it and don't be too disheartened r&b as North had no rivals recently too. ;)

Most people have a rivalry with Port and its a credit to their success over a long period of time that its like that.
Norwood v Port obviously the biggest over a long time.
Sturt v Port from the 60s.
West v Port from the 50s.
North v Port from the early 70s.
Glenelg v Port from the late 70s through to the early 90s.

Perhaps we could have a rivalry round split over 6 weeks with Port in all of them!

Other "kind of" rivalrys that come to mind are perhaps Central v Eagles from this century.
North v Glenelg from the 80s.
Norwood v South from the 1800s.
And perhaps "derbys" instead of "rivalries" going on geographical positions.
North v Central, Norwood v Sturt, Glenelg v South, West v Eagles

I like the idea of the geographical derby's Wedgie, the only thing is it leaves out the Magpies and one would suggest a Rivalry Round without the 'Pies would be a little hollow.

Perhaps a Derby Round would be a good concept.

For mine:

Port V Norwood is a must.
Central V Eagles on modern day goings on.
North V Bays for the 80's
Sturt V West for the Blackwood Zone Cup.... ( And 83 )

Sorry Panfers.

The fact that every combination we can come up forces us to "apologise" to 1 team for being left out is enough reason of itself, to me, that we shouldn't have a "rivalry round".

It's an insult to the both the token last combination and the team that misses out altogether

What makes you think R&B is disheartened by Westies missing out on Rivalry Round?

It was in relation to the whole sentence as its all related hence the use of the word 'as'. I would have broken it up into separate sentences if trying to make more than 1 point.

If you have any further queries about my posts I'd suggest you PM me.

I agree with the other posters - our biggest rival over the past 10 years would have to be the Eagles.

Since 2000 we have played North 26 times for a 22 4 win/loss ratio - hardly a rivalry!

Wedgie my confusion with your post was that R&B hasn't posted in this thread so i was unsure of why you would make reference to his feelings about the Rivalry Round whether in Jest or not.

Ahhh, now Im with you, you should have said that in the first place.
Put that down to a combination of my phone having a small screen and my shocking short term memory.
(When I quote a post the screen is so small that Im just going on memory as to who Im replying to)
Apologies to yourself and r&b, crikey Im glad we cleared that up!
