Interest in an SANFL "Heritage" Round?

Just wanted to get the thoughts of some of the posters in here on the possibility of petitioning the SANFL to have a Heritage Round included in the SANFL next season.

Let me state that I see a "Heritage Round" as completley a different thing to a "Rivalry Round". Not to say though that old Rivalarys could not be used in the programming, if it was a 1950's Heritage focus then a match between Port and West would be the go.

I think that if given the right planning and preparation, a Heritage Round could do a lot to promote the SANFL Competition in the community. The history of the SANFL is incredibly rich and has put many postives into the history of Football in general and I think its a great opportunity to profile the teams and legends of the past.

Most clubs have some awesome looking Heritage Guernseys, dare I say it, but Glenelgs 1930's jumper is one and the West Torrens Gold Eagle another.

Sturt do a good job of providing Temporary fencing at their matches, what we could do is put the same fencing up at Kensington Oval one of the original SANFL grounds still going, South and I think Norwood used Kensington as a home oval at some stage, so it could be a good site for a South vs Norwood match in Heritage rounds.

Gawler and Willunga FC's are still going, it would be great for them to play a curtain raiser to commemorate the history of their own clubs in the then SAFL.

No doubt people can come up with plenty of good ideas, yet I am sure that it is something worth exploring!

I just might do that. Now where did I put those GF videos, not sure if I want to watch 88,89,90,92,94.......I've got 5 to start with and none of them are from the silent era.

So who played in those games if Port Magpies only existed from '97?

What part of their heritage do clubs not acknowledge now, that would in turn be acknowledged in "Heritage Round" ?

The SANFL did attempt a 'Living in the 70's' heritage round in 2006 but only Centrals and the umpires wore retrospective uniforms (and the ABC commentary team if that counts).

Probably due to the other being almost the same as what they are now.

I'd assume the Eagles had the bye ?

I love Glenelg's Heritage jumper it wore against North a few years ago. Would like that as a "clash" jumper if we need to wear one.

Just leave the SANFL the way it is ... no heritage rounds, no rivalry rounds, no Dreamtime at the G, no clown costumes or mikes for umpires, no rule changes just for the sake of it, no Hutchy or Caro, no over the top censorship (onya Andy Collins), and FFS no away guernseys.

There I feel better now ...

Certainly understand the sentiment, but I have to say, I'd be up for a heritage round. I think the idea of picking a year and doing the draw based on the rivalries of that season would be the way to go. I definitely wouldn't agree with dreamtimes and clown costumes and some of the other crap the AFL comes up with, but I think a heritage round is something most fans would enjoy.

On reflection, I think this is a reasonable idea if it's not done every year and as you say, a true heritage round (not rivalry) ... and we don't change anything else!

There is nothing wrong with commemorating the 132 year history of this competition, THE OLDEST still running sporting league in Australia.

Listening to some you may think that football didn't exist in SA before 1991 but as a league we have a proud and rich tradition spanning way back to 1877 (and even further for South & Port).

A herritage round, properly promoted can help educate the general South Australian public (especially the younger generation) about that tradition which in turn means that the SANFL still matters.

As a suggestion the SA History Trust runs History Week each May over about 10 days including 2 weekends.

If the league linked in the History Trust, the history of SA football could be one of their main themes for the week with 8 clubs given the change to have a home game that recognises in what ever way they see fit the history of their club.

When I was at South in 2007 we had a history day game against Glenelg when we wore a replica of a (there were numerous) 1877 jumper in which the 1st SA football premiership was won. The History Trust promoted the event and it turned out to be a great promotion highlighting the tradition of the club, we even won the game and made money from the auction.

I agree we dont want to be a copy of the AFL (who no longer have herritage round anyway) but on this occassion our history deserves promoting.

Heritage round is OK so long as more is done than just have the teams roll out some guernsey from the past. ie, media releases and other things to really celebrate the history and educate the younger generation about where the league came from. Basically what PhilH said!

Rivalry round is a fizzer however IMO. All that happens is Port v Norwood, then Centrals v Eagles, Glenelg v North/Sturt and then poor West and South either get pointlessly drawn to meet or one cops a bye. I think it's pointless in the AFL as well because there's always the last group of teams that miss the boat and get drawn together as token 'rivals'.
