jack junipers debut...is it a record ?

Postby bayman » Tue May 05, 2009 12:00 am

well we all know jack juniper played his first game for norwood booting 5 goals & most from difficult angles, now the question is, his first 3 kicks in league footy were all goals & while i know 2 goals has been done (darly smith said on 5rph he had 2 goals from his first 2 kicks in league footy) so it has been done (at least once) but has 3 goals from the first 3 kicks of a career ever been acheived before ? ironically his 4th kick was smothered & his 5th kick was a goal as well

for those that didn't see him he is a deadly accurate kick at goal
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

I think Dale Symmons kicked at least 3 from his first three kicks in league footy? Maybe 4? I might be wrong, but I reckon it was against Glenelg at the bay.

This is off topic slightly as its AFL related, but i think Rutten did something similar in his first game, i think against the Eagles in Perth.

Sorry ‘bayman’, I couldn’t give a flying f*ck if it’s a record or not.
A proven WAFL footballer backing himself to move east should make any talent scout sit up and take notice.
His physical dimensions alone should have any experienced club officials salivating.
But when a guy like this shows how easily he can make a Burley behave the way he did in the trial match
against you guys, then any coach worth a pinch of proverbial should have been playing him since round 1.
Those who know me (fester 69 etc.) will attest to the fact that I’ve been relentless in this opinion for 5 weeks.
Many have said (or thought) “change the record SABRE” so the Centrals game came as a welcome justification
for my faith in ‘Jumping Jack’.
Having re-read my Norwood v Centrals Preview post in hind sight, I can’t find too many errors.
Perhaps Squawky would like to point them all out again.

he is from adelaide drafted from Sacred Heart. So he didnt really back himself, he was delisted and moved home pretty much after. After his delisting if he gave a sh** he woulda went straight to the SANFL and tried to get back on an AFL list

Quite right 'CoverKing'. If I remember correctly Sacred Heart being 'the land of Gallagher &
Fosdike'. But what I'm getting at is that the guy not only has talent, he's got ambition.
He's obviously presented himself to bigger and better competitions along the way and hopefully
Norwood not only appreciates his abilities, but utilises them fully.

PS - Some WAFL folk with whom I've spoken wish he'd hung around. They too were impressed !

He is a Sacred Heart lad

Tough world the AFL. I have a mate whose lad was recently drafted by a Melbourne club. These clubs draft the kids, then set about pulling some of them apart "brick by brick" and reassembling them to what they want. They lose a lot of their natural game to fit into a mould of what the coach wants. They can be turned into robots and lose the love of the game just to find that they dont get a game. We all love the "contest" but they are now taught to avoid kicking to a contest. Its pretty soul destroying and Dads get very $hitty about it.

I remember a young Shaun Rehn not getting a game because thought he wasn't ready. He made a huge impact when he did finally play but Cornes still said he wasn't ready and used to use him sparingly. Cornes used to get booed for continually taking Rehn off the ground when he was just starting to influence the game and not giving him a proper go.

Maybe a stint back in the amateurs rekindles that love of just playing football and gets their confidence in their own natural ability back.

Benet Copping comes to mind as well. Mind you, I didn't think much of him when he played schoolbóys. He expected himself to dominate but didn't do the work on the ground. he was very good against the smaller schools but disinterested against the bigger ones. From accounts, maybe he is starting to actually use his talents with SPOC

I have a feeling that Mark Jones (Norwood) had 4 for 4 in his debut. If I remember correctly it was against West at Football Park in 1991 or 92.

Or it could have been Mark telling me he kicked 4 from 4 after a few Cooper's.

Jimmy, great post.

PS: I know it's AFL but didn't West Coast's Daniel Metropolis have something like six from six on debut?

On debut in Round 3, 1992 vs St Kilda, he had 9 kicks, 3 handballs and 4 marks and kicked 6.0 - still looking on Google to see if they were his first six kicks, though

IIRC Ian Wilmott kicked 6 on debut at the Parade in 83' ... Farmer probably managed a lazy 14 or something

The thing that impreesed me with this guy was his ability to lead to positions on the ground that suited his kicking style which was to lead to his left every time. Seems like a very smart footballer. I think the legs have a real player there.

I think you're right, in fact I think that game and that performance is covered in the "The Way It Was" tape from that year.
