thought there was going to be a boilover in this game when the Adelaide Oval scoreboard attendants had South leading at half time 12.7 to 5.3 (the one was removed after about 15 minutes).

In tough conditions, with the wind blowing across the ground, slightly favouring the Port Road end, the Eagles were able to kick some late 1st quarter goals to be up 4 goals to nothing at quarter time. To South's credit, they lifted their intensity and got themselves back in the game and had the better of it for the next two quarters. The Eagles were always able to kick a steadier, just when South looked threatening.

Being three goals up at 3/4 time, the Eagles were slightly in the better position, but South were kicking to the Port Road end in the last and it was anyones game. However, the Eagles lifted and got more of the ball in the last and South's key players, Torney and Boyd, suffered heavy hits and Warren missed a sitter running into an open goal which sucked any hope South had out of the game. Warren did later in the quarter kick a brilliant goal from the boundary.

The Eagles better players included Fiacchi, Grocke, Stewart, McGregor and Allmond. There were a lot of Eagles players who didn't feature today though. Unlike last week, there were a number of passengers playing today and if those same players are picked and perform like that next week, North will belt us. I thought the umpiring by one umpire in particular was terrible (the small umpire). He was whistle happy and in tough conditions - gave so many soft free kicks to both teams. The other two were okay.

A win is a win. It's good to be out of the cold!

The one that got away.

South should have been in front at 1/2 time but so many missed shots on goal .And how Warren missed that goal in the last I have no idea .
IMHO and talking with my lad the Eagles went into today's game to tall.Still lacking that small crumbing forward a few times the ball went and out as all we had were "tall" forwards .
In all honesty south lost the game by the way they played the last quarter.They didn't get the ball and run and attack with it when given the chance.And as Aerie said some very big hits in they last term (not sure if they were directed to do this by the coach or the result of not paying holding the pay frees).Plus some more subtle pushes out the way .and the likes of Cica,shirley,Fiacchi and co throwing themselves under the packs to get the ball out .

So can the league honestly program games like this at such a late time on a venue without lights . Seeing the poor numbers of fans perhaps playing the game at 2pm Sunday may have been better .Even with the Crows playing against the gate .

And Eagles need to lift the 2's won by 101 points so some may well be pushing for selection .

I reckon South played 100% better than the first three quarters of last week. Maybe if they had of kicked straighter at crucial points of the match it may have been a different result. South played smarter footy in the slippery and gale force cross breeze conditions by not being handball happy like we were. I'm biased, but I think BOG should go to Ken McGregor for his number of repels out of defence, a sure mark in those winds and didn't waste his disposals. But going on last year, James Boyd will probably be awarded the 3 Magarey Votes.

On a side note, Anthony Carlile would have to feel unlucky, a rarest of rare free kicks in the SANFL (a deliberate out of bounds) against him, which was just plain wrong. He paddles the ball about 30 metres along the boundary line under pressure, gathers it and handballs it in front of him. It goes out of bounds and gets penalised.

I don't recall wind like that before during a match, just nudging out the 2000 match at Richmond for mine. But the rain during the Reserves was something notable:

I agreed with that decision, it was a scoop rather than a knock. I didn't see anything happen after the match myself.

Kenny McGregor....was outstanding in those conditions....his one grab overhead marks in today's blustery weather conditions was first class.......not to mention his reading of the play.....

Adam Grocke game was also outstanding......his tackling was hard and effective all day......created a few turnovers......and kicked truly......great game!

Jarrad Allmond once again just runs all day and picks up many possessions (26) ...this lad is a ball magnet with good disposal and leg speed.....

Mark McKenzie another top display (30) in wet weather football.......

together with Shirley, Heir, Broadbent, Stewart, Fiacchi, Treeby...

Corey McKernan was impressive.....I am certain the Crows have a beauty.....plays very much like his older brother and has a great leap....he does need to work on his kicking.....

What the heck? I have never seen deliberate paid at SANFL level, that is astonishing! And thanks for that great picture.

Also thanks centrecirclelegend, pleased to hear McKernan had another solid outing. Where did he play?

I was thinking that as I watched the Sturt North game...

McKernan played ruck and up forward for most of the day.......

The training lights at Woodville did make a difference in the last quarter but not for night footy.

I think that the rain at Noarlunga at the start of the 16s was heavier that what's in the picture. It was so heavy that I could just see the goals at the Northern end from the timekeepers box.
