Centrals 50th Anniversary in SANFL

Postby Big Phil » Tue Apr 07, 2009 9:04 pm

As many of you would know 2009 marks the 50th year of existance in the SANFL for the Central Districts Football Club having come into the competition back in 1959, spending the first 5 years in the reserves competition.

The club has made mention that there will be a few things happening throughout the course of the season as part of the celebrations and the first part will take place on ANZAC Day when they take on Glenelg in the Grand Final rematch.

This from the Centrals web site shows what they have planned for the day...

www.cdfc.com.au wrote:Our Round 5 Clash on Anzac Day against Glenelg at Adelaide Oval is significant for many reasons.
Not only will we clash with Glenelg in the traditional Grand Final rematch at Adelaide Oval, but April 25 2009 marks the 50th anniversary to the day of the Central District Football Club’s first ever match played back in 1959.

To commemorate this fantastic milestone, our League Team will wear a commemorative replica of the 1959 guernsey on Anzac Day against Glenelg and we are giving you the opportunity to own one of the guernseys that the team will wear on the day. All 21 guernsey’s worn on the day will be available to purchase and each individual player will sign their own guernsey. This is a rare opportunity to claim a piece of Club history and will be available for only $250.

The picture below shows the guernsey to be worn on the day:

Congrats to the CDFC on your milestone. Would have to be much sweeter than any other milestone for the club considering the success you guys now enjoy.
Like the guernsey BTW. Out of interest, how many different designs have Central had over the years.

About 5

- The Footscray style one (ala the commerorative guernsey)
- The 'V' Style (1970's)
- The white one (1980's)
- The current home one (from 1991ish)
- The current away one (from 2008)

I'm sure someone can confirm this, or add any I've missed.

BTW I love the commerorative guernsey.
They don't keep me here because I'm gorgeous and 5'10

For the last ten years anyway.

I am jealous of CDFC's achievements over the last decade, and would love my club to put together a similar golden dynasty of success, but for the forty years before that they were a joke. Let's be honest here people.

Here are a few images of the older jumpers they have had and of course most would be familiar with the current one they wear...

Joke is a bit harsh don't you think topsy

Of course we know their finals record is terrible from the early days and in our formative years we struggled, which would have surely been expected.

To say a team is a joke is just a tad harsh don't you think. One could say that Norwood are a joke for breaching the salary cap the way they did last year, but one wont because they think calling a team a "joke" is a joke

Phil, I reckon topsy is on to something. We were a joke. Bottom feeders for 30 odd years before we got our sh1t together and actually planned for the future. After 10 years that took hold and the last 10 years have been pretty bloody awesome.

But to deny we were a joke is a bit difficult - obviously you didn't go to school in the 70's and 80's with supporters of other clubs.

The only laughable thing with Centrals back years ago was that they couldn't win a finals game. I hardly think the club was a joke overall when you stack it up against South, West Torrens, West Adelaide and Woodville - they were far worse a joke if that is the right word to use.

Congratulations to Centrals on reaching the milestone. The club has had it hard days but over the last 15 years is now enjoying the success of being a good club. I would say that Kris Grant has had a big say in the make up of the club.

Sort of agree. A joke when it comes to finals performances pre 2000 (though I never found it funny). From 1964 to 1999 though I guess 13 top 5 finishes isn't too bad (though not great). (2 times 2nd place, 4 times 3rd, 3 times 4th and 4 times 5th). The actual winning final games record ratio would be terrible. To disheartening to re-visit. This century though :D :D

Couldn't agree more Drebin - Some people would have you believe Centrals were the laughing stock of the League in the 70's & 80"s where, with all due respect, Woodville had that market well and truly cornered.
Players win touches, Teams win matches, Clubs win Premierships.

I just think using the term "a joke" is just a bit over the top. Being born in the early 80's I obviously wasn't around to cop flack from other clubs supporters but certainly began to understand it in the early 90's when it was brought to my attention more as we were starting to build some success.

Perfect examples there as well drebin and I agree with you on both points. There were certainly other teams that had performances through previous decades that were pretty terrible as well. Yes it was our poor finals performances and a couple of shocking seasons that made us the laughing stock at times but prior to our successful era more recenlty, we still had Magarey Medalists and some pretty special players.

You would certainly have to place some value on the competitiveness of the Dogs pre 2000's ... Wouldn't be the easiest of circumstances to development a new club and compete against some pretty heavily established powerbrokers, and I'd guess that there would have been a lot of hard work went into representing their community to a sufficient enough level for the community to embrace the club ... Even through the 80's you couldn't knock the support the Dogs always had.
