Magpies Supporters and Power Supporters

After a few brews and reading many comments on these forums I felt compelled to remind everyone that many Port Magpie and Power fans support both sides.(seems many non port people wish you'd believe otherwise) I do not wish to attract comments based on legall issues, sponserships issues, home grounds issues or otherwise, merely acknowledge that many Magpie supporters follow the Power and vice/versa.
If you choose to only follow one and not the other then thats fine. My entire family and many friends grew up following the Magpies and now the Power and over the years have invested many $ into these sides. To me, its no different to following the Redbacks and the Australian cricket side at the same time. I couldnt care less as to how we gained entry into the AFL (bullsh*t politics) and what jumper we pull on, as far as I'm concerned we are still known as Port Adelaide Football Club in the AFL and SANFL !
Lawyers stick to law, Politicians stick politics, Media stick to news and I'll stick to being an Aussie Rules supporter !
Carn the Magpies
Carn the Power
lets stick together and shove it up em.........again !!!

Look I married into a Port family and yes my family still talks to me  and have to agree with what u are saying BUT
There is always a but .I have seen Port fans dressed in Power Gear fighting Port fans dressed in magpies gear at Alberton .After a loss.with both groups claiming to own the oval .

So while I agree with what you are writing I have seen the infighting between both groups at the footy.

Not trying to get into a footy fight just stating what I have seen.

I'd fully expect Port fans posting on here still have a passion for the Magpies, being a SANFL site, but is it the common feeling amongst "Port" supporters?

Is it now time to kill off the Port Adelaide Magpies?

This is from a Port supporter:

as soon as the magpies are gone, the better we'll all be for it - it was an experiment that has failed on all fronts. nothing positive has come about the 2 entities & has only caused much derision, division & angst amongst port people with a healthy dose of bullshit from non port people added into it too.

there is only one pafc.

I really cant understand this thinking.

ask the Magpie faithful who drink at the Alberton what they think of the Power and why they don't drink at the Club anymore.....one of my best mates is one of these people........

why does a Magpie Champion who played for the Power hate them so much he refuses to go to any Power Functions and would rather be a member of Collingwood then give his money to the Power......this he told me so himself which stunned me!

the division between the two clubs is very real and it is not small by any means !............

In the years immediately preceding the formation of Port Power, the Port Magpies attracted typical (in a median sense) crowds of around 7000 (from memory) to Alberton. This includes opposition supporters.

Conversely, 20000 is considered low for a Port Power crowd; crowds have been closer to 30000 in the better years.

Simple figures do not lie: Most of the Power supporters did not follow Port Magpies. Or if they did, their support was nominal at best. The converse may well be true (i.e. Magpie supporters generally follow the Power), but the assertion that many support both sides is simply false.

As further evidence of the above, I've heard that crowds watching Port Magpies play curtain raisers to Power matches (back in the early days of the Power) were not more than a few thousand at first bounce. I submit that if Power fans followed both teams equally then the crowd would be much higher from the outset.

Nor can I fathom it. I can only suggest that the author is NOT a dinkum Port supporter. Frankly the SANFL is in a much better state for having fickle effwits like this leave it for good.

Here Here. Anyone who thinks the vast majority of power supporters are not magpie supporters and vice versa your in lala land. That doesnt mean there arent exceptions but really who cares if you know a disgruntled supporter down at the pub who only follows one side and not the other. The VAST MAJORITY do follow both.

I can only speak from my own perspective, and this holds true in my case ... Most of my mates are Port supporters and they can be found nearly every weekend at AAMI watching the Power, yet they can also be found as often at the suburban grounds watching the Magpies.

Im a Norwood fan obviously and to me there's no greater rivalry than Norwood v Port and I would be devastated if there were no Magpies in the SANFL ... In fact if things ever got that bad at Alberton I'd take a Magpies membership just to do my bit to help.

Great to read the article by Matthew Richardson by the way ... Putting all jealousies aside and being honest with ourselves, I don't think the SANFL would be remotely the same without the Magpies.

I'm always surprised by the vitriol in the various Magpies v Power debates.

From both sides.

Even though I love having two Port teams to barrack for...

Obviously others don't.

Your views on anything Port Adelaide are so blinded by the fact you will never be seen as equals to us and this you just dont/cant deal with. Even if you win 30 Premierships before we win another at SANFL level we all know the SANFL changed in 1990 and anything post that year holds less credibility than the years previous to that. If you dont realise this you are blind.

I am not sure this is the same with every Magpie supporter, my mates and i drink at Alberton Oval and we support both the Magpies and the Power.
I aslo have mates who drink there regularly that support the Magpies and a different AFL club.
Peoples views on the two Port clubs are very different.

The Magpie champion you refer to was at Alberton Oval on the Sunday after the Power won the premiership in 04.

Bandwaggoner. ;)

On topic, I know plenty of Magpie supporters and they all also barrack for the Power. I'm aware there are some that hate the Power, but I reckon its a small minority.

Even if you drop a weight class, you're still punching against someone in the same class as yourself. So why is a premiership less "credible"?

It's probably a little less prestigious thanks to the overwhelming focus on the AFL, but each premiership means as much to a true supporter as it did thirty years ago.
