Perhaps well enough to step up and fill the spot when the Power folds? ;)

i thought the norwood sturt merger was on again & going to be the 18th team in the afl instead of west sydney & their home ground would be the adelaide oval

The honour board would be just a mass of honour and pride when they read that between them they have a massive 7 premierships and 38 wooden spoons between them in the last 89 years.

It looks even better if you go back to 1900 with a total of 7 premierships and 43 spoons but we wouldn't want the proud, proud club of the merged Glenelg clubs history to look even more tarnished by including pre 1920.

just stirring south and bays fans

Even by combining their records, South and Glenelg still wouldn't manage 8 wooden spoons in a row. :P

The second SA based AFL team isn't profitable, how would a third one fare?

I think if a 3rd one was handled and promoted correctly it would be very profitable, the SANFL clubs missed out on another big cash cow with the Power getting unfortunately. It could be an extremely costly decision in 10 years time.

Agree. With Port's chopping and changing which demographic they were targeting has made a dogs breakfast of what could have been a big membership base.

Another composite AFL team was always going to be a better bet as only a minority of non-Port Adelaide supporters were ever going to get on board with the Power.
Once they started talking up their "long history of success" and re-identiying with the SANFL Magpies of the past they, predictably, lost some of those.

I don't think more than 8 SANFL teams is sustainable in the present market, and I think a merger should be encouraged - and if Norwood were one of the teams to do so I'd live with it.

Why would fans of an existing composite team leave that club to go to another composite club? Putting in 2 SA clubs with a similar background would make no sense. I guess we could call them Crows A and Crows B.

I suppose the bigger question is why wouldn't they. Copy a succesful formula instead of going with an unsuccessful one, it only makes sense.
Most people I know don't have anytime for the Crows but would be keen as mustard for a second composite side, myself included. Marketed correctly it would be a big winner, if the Crows are the team for all South Australians why not make a team for all of Adelaide to counter them? :D
City v Country! ;)

There would be no rivalry though, there would be no worthwhile debate on the AFL board on here, and every week the crowd at AAMI, despite being a sell out, would look like this: ;)

That youtube link was inspiring stuff. The players would really have worked themselves into a lather after such an overflow of emotion from the crowd :)

If a team is to be scrapped or forced to merge, on what criteria should this decision be made? Should it be poor performance or a continuously poor balance sheet?

Only good question on this thread. I guess you would have to say balance sheet which puts my club at risk. Can't see it being allowed to happen by any club though.
All supporters come to the party when the cash is needed.
