Boundary Zone Changes

I gather that soon the SANFL Boundary Changes will be made public. I would like to say that I dont agree with South having its boundary moved and I would like to give my reason why that is the case and I feel that it may well apply to other SANFL clubs that have an area allocated to them in the outer suburban fringe.

South are constantly being moved in their boundaries, from St Marys to now Morphett Vale, the boundary is progressivley being pushed further southwards. The result is constant instability in the recruiting zones affected and likely to be affected. I dont see why it naturally follows that because a club is in the outer suburbs that they have to be constantly pushed outwards as the boundaries have to be moved.

Considering the closure of Morphett Vale High School due to a lack of numbers of students to make it viable, I doesnt appear that it is a great gain in any event. All it serves to do is to unsettle the clubs affected in the area.

Hence I hope that this time the board of the SAFC stand up to the SANFL and do whatever it takes to stop it from happening. If Westies or Glenelg want new areas, allocate them areas outside of the urban fringe as the SANFL previously did with West Torrens and the Modbury area and leave us to consolidate our club in our own area.

I sympathise with you, Sojourner, but I doubt any changes to West's boundaries would be at South's expense.

I also believe the Boundaries Commission rulings can't be appealed against.

so if a hypothetical twenty thousand extra people are projected to move into the south zone in the next few years you will take that and give nothing to the clubs that dont have expanding zones
The boundaries are changed for the same reason that electoral areas are also rezoned

Some very valid points sojourner. It must also be said that Souths country zone has key population centres which include the goolwa to Victor strip. This area is usually described as Gods waiting room, hence the demographic for young potential footballers in that area is small.
The SAFC board must vigorously resist any boundary changes that will deny the club an opportunity to develop its current area.
Moving Glenelgs boundary into the shadows of the Noarlunga grandstand will hardly give the safc anything to smile about.The Glenelg football club with whom the safc have always endured a somewhat tetchy relationship have found it necessary to sell raffle tickets at Collinades shopping centre and at Victor Harbour, while there is apparently nothing the safc can do about this, it could be considered to be a touch presumptuous on Glenelgs behalf.
The safc have a substantial debt to service on their Noarlunga facility and this move would surely endanger the revenue stream and potential repayments.
We have been a mobile club in the sanfl's eyes since 1900 when we were forced to move after winning 6 flags in the 1890's. We have been on the move since. We have a huge investment at Noarlunga and our newly elected board will have to fight tooth and nail to resist this challenge.

Newport Quays, Urban redevelopements, Cheltenham Racecourse redevelopment would suggest that the numbers of people in traditional suburbs are also increasing.

Let me try and put it another way,

Suppose the Eagles, Norwood, or say even the Bays apply to the SANFL for a boundary change, why shouldent the SANFL allocate them the Unley Area and tell Sturt to go to Mt Barker to play their games and physically push Sturt into the Hills as they are attempting to do with the SAFC?

Of course I dont think that should be done, but I hope that it helps illustrates my point that Sturt are enabled the Stability to stay in their area and the same respect should be shown to the SAFC as well.

The boundaries are changed according to the number of eligible young lads in each zone. The demographics are researched thoroughly to ensure a fair allocation. How many other people or developments are in each zone is irrelevant.

West have been 9th on the list by a long way for many, many years.

It had to change and it will now.

The findings can't be appealed, as I've said.

You want your Northern boundary to stay the same but have an increase in poulation due to the expanding number of families setting up homes in the seaford area??? Effectively you want a metro zone with a popualtion bigger than everyone elses.

20 years ago you made a conscious decison to move south and it was made permanent 15 years ago.

Given the amount of development at Aldinga, Goolwa, Victor, Compass and crikey even Myponga has a new housing develpment starting I would hardly suggest that you will struggle fr talented young 15 year olds in the new distribution. As a former resident of your country zone and as someone who visits the fluerieu every fortnight I would hardly call it exclusively Gods waiting room.

What Glenelg, Port, West and even North wouldn't love to have a country population base the equivalent of Naracoorte bordertown and Keith (Willunga, Aldinga and Sellicks) within half an hour of its training base

I suggest any complaints from South about the boundary distribution will quite justifiably be met with derisive laughter around teh SANFL table.

PS don't feel aggrieved about us selling raffle tickets in your zone we do it in Centrals zone too in fact no other clubs zone is immune

Have a gander over on SL.org and you'll find the blokes selling GFC raffle tickets have been seen as far afield as Hollywood Plaza and Elizabeth City Centre I think the ticket sellers are basically contracted by the club, they get a commission per ticket/book sold, and they decide entirely where they're going to sell the tickets. When I spoke to the seller at Hollywood Plaza he said they go everywhere. So I wouldn't read too much presumption on Glenelg's part in the matter. FWIW I've seen Sturt raffle ticket sellers in "unusual" places too.

Also FWIW I'm on your side with regards to moving boundaries. Some years ago (mid nineties) I remember hearing someone from South on 5AA grizzling about losing some area to other clubs. He made the point that they put time and effort into developing kids, holding pie and pasty nights for the schools, all that sort of groundwork with the local schools, only to see the fruit of their efforts taken from them. Certainly boundaries should be made flexible to accomodate shifting demographhics, but not at the expense of a club's heartland. There may be some merit in establishing non-contiguous metropolitan zones.
