Thankyou for you thoughts sp. Being embarrassed like we were yesterday is difficult but unfortunately the few south supporters that still are about are used to it. Hopefully next year with Clay at the helm, we can get our experienced players fit and on the park, embark on an active but selective recruiting campaign in the off season and the further expansion of our "creche "we may be a little more competitive next time we meet.We had 13 players in the side yesterday who are 21 or less- including 4 19 yo's an 18 yo and a 17yo.Hopefully yesterdays debacle wont scar them too much.

The problem is SturtPeter that this type of thread at the end of the season perpetually comes up in relation to the South Adelaide Football Club......
It is my thought that the current main problem at South are the Poker Machines and the massive amounts of revenue that they are putting into the club. On one hand the club is cashed up, on the other hand the funds insulate the club from actually having to take action to deal with problems. If South had to rely on gate takings and the older styled sources of revenue that clubs traditionally had to rely on we could well be in a better position with a lot less funds at we would have to work a lot harder to make the right decisions. Robert Pyman may well still have been at the club with the actual support of the players and a group that wanted to play for him. Currently we have a situation where we are making stupid financial descisions - Sacking Pyman, Cahill and there is no consequence of having done so as the one arm bandits contine to fund and facilitate the Dads Army brigade at South.

South in their search for new recruits may well be better served finding some depth from within SA and then topping up with 2 recruits from the AFL.
Local lads who are struggling for an oppurtunity but are a real chance to make it and could appreciate the oppurtunities South has to off.
Sturt - Anderson, Weir, Read
Glenelg - Grosser
Centrals - Duncan
Eagles - Fitzgerald
All of these are still kids and could have a future. At worst they bring much needed depth to the club and you would suspect they would come cheap. With a bit of luck a couple of them will jump out of the ground and when mixed with the current crop of kids it could be the foundations for success 4 years down the track.

or stupid.
I plan to post a similar patronising thread about Sturt as soon as they are out of the comp this season - see how SP likes it

Sojourner, again, Cahill was not sacked, all SANFL clubs rely heavily on pokies for income, without that income our new facilities would have never been built. As far as flushed with funds the club surplus took a heavy downturn last financial year (refer annual report) and now the club has a substantial debt to repay which is largely dependent upon sound income stream from the pokies, just like other SANFL clubs who have debt to service.
Whatever, i like your thinking there are a number of potential league players ready to go but not having the opportunity at Sturt, Eagles, Glenelg that South may want to talk to as well as encouraging a large number of the ressies grand final side of 2007 to return to the fold.

With reference to Moriarty and Deane, neither of them played in a South premierships side.
Do people realise that South have been a basket case on field for most of the time since the second World War. In the 19 years between 1945 and 1963 the highest they finished was sixth in an eight team comp.
They then won the flag in 1964, were very competitive for the next two years and yet bottom again by 1969. They were competitive for a while in the last 1970s early 1980s, but then more wooden spoons followed in the late 80s.
Reidy got them to a minor premiership in 1991, but once again other than 2006 they have horribly underachieved again.
Someone once said that they were the only club with 50 supporters and 51 factions. They have some real advantages now, like their area, but they need strong administration and a very strong coach who won't take interference from any other group.

South have had a good junior zone for over 20 years - their juniors have always been very good and they have been located in the heart of their zone now for almost 15 years.
How much longer do South supporters have to wait?

Well they've reversed the b1tch tag and had it put firmly placed on the Bays now so that's a start.

A South supporting mate of mine reckons that the members bumper stickers should have written on them: Panthers - There's Always Next Year.
Although he did say that if they printed 10,000 of those 8 years ago, they'd almost be out of them by now.

A similar question was asked in general conversation during the call of Port v Glenelg on the weekend...
What is the longest running premiership drought in SANFL football ?
Is it South Adelaide's 45 year run, with their last flag way back in 1964 ???
Perhaps, cue Spelly ???

The thing is Darley, what is the real actual cost?
There was the stage, two red lights and a dodgy P.A.
You trod the planks way back then
And it's strange that you're here again, here again
And I wish I, wish I knew the right words
To make you feel better, walk out of this place
and Defeat them in your secret battle
Show them you can be your own man again
Don't, don't explain
Lots of little victories take on the pain
It takes so long to earn
You can double up or you can burn, you can burn
And I wish I, wish I knew the right words
To make you feel better, walk out of this place
and Defeat them in your secret battle
Show them you can be your own man again
And I wish I, wish I knew the right words
To blow up the pokies and drag them away
'Cause they're taking the food off your table
So they can say that the trains run on time
Flashing lights, it's a real show
And your wife? I wouldn't go home
The little bundles need care
And you can't be a father there, father there
And I wish I, wish I knew the right words
To make you feel better, walk out of this place
and Defeat them in your secret battle
Show them you can be your own man again, show them you can be your own man again..
And I wish I, wish I knew the right words
To blow up the pokies and drag them away
'Cause they're taking the food off your table
So they can say that the trains run on time

I'd like that song a lot more if he weren't such a sanctimonious windbag.
