Good idea from the Sunday Mail, nice to see that it's not all spelling mistakes and dwindling coverage. ;)

If what I saw at Elizabeth is anything to go by Nick Salter would be favourite for Eagles. Not too many players I'd suspect have kicked a goal on the full, inside the centre square on that ground.

If AFL listed players count its Damon White by a country mile, probably the only player to score a goal from the wing of Adelaide Oval. Ive never seen anyone else get close to that in my lifetime let alone any current players.
If its not AFL listed players then we have a fight on our hands and need to get measuring tape out.

I'd say Damien Cupido would be a contender.

I would also back Cupido as the longest-he is definitely not the best driver though.

But what a complete and utter shame that the author could only supply examples from VFL history. Really, who gives a toss about some Melbourne reserves player who managed a torpedo punt in a reserves grand final from the 1910's (or whatever). It is a sad state of affairs when those who should be conversant with the game's history are entirely ignorant of what happened outside of Melbourne's city limits.

In recent years David Mitchell was a bloke who regularly kicked the skin off the ball. One of his goals in particular remains in my mind. At Glenelg Oval v North in 2006 he managed a goal at the southern end from about 70 metres out, stuck on the eastern boundary. Would have gone 70 metres up as well as forwards, and easily cleared the outstretched fingertips of the defenders on the goal line.

I think, Bruce Winter but there were so many players who fluctuated between the two I don't know.

Pettingill came to us after playing for the Redlegs.

REB will know.

I assume they'll try to ensure similar conditions for each clubs attempt especially wind speed and direction otherwise it's meaningless.

Would be nice to extend the comp too...include other grades...although it's not an official stat it would be interesting to see how some of the clubs potential stars compare.

Regards
JAS

Bob Shearman was an incredibly good kick - long and accurate every time.

Speaking as someone who saw them play, Shearman was an enormous kick, he could kick a droppy from the centre of Adelaide oval and drop it
in the goalsquare. Pettingill was a huge kick as well- I saw him in the early days of footy park kick a drop punt from the halfback flank which after 1 bounce went out of bounds next to the point post. Another memorable kick was by west torrens playing coach Bill Barratt at thebby- kicked a barrell for a goal out of the centre.

Saw the Barratt barrell BAW, from memory it was a droppy from the centre circle and cleared the fence, no wind :D
