Port and the SANFL are in a lose/lose position with regards to the Power reserves being in the SANFL.
I genuinely feel sorry for true Magpie supporters but they are dead; have been for a while and the last rights will be officially administered if and when Port join the VFL/AFL reserves.
As some have previously quite rightly noted, when Port won the right to an AFL licence in 1996, their submission to the SANFL was to not have a side in the SANFL, but the SANFL insisted that the Magpies continue as a completely separate entity from the Power and be based at Ethelton.
So in reality, this action, if approved, was always going to eventuate.
The Crows are a completely separate matter, and in my opinion, should never have been allowed to participate as a club in the SANFL. Hopefully they will follow Port, and really have no choice but to.
I will note that for some of my 8 year absence from this site, I had a role in an SANFL club that basically precluded me from posting here, and during that time, there was only one club that had a League Director that was openly opposed to the AFL clubs participating in the SANFL.
My club had no issues with it, and that was clearly evident from the Board down to the football department, which to be honest, staggered me at the time.
If both AFL side do leave, then the SANFL has an opportunity to make some changes that will benefit the competition. It will be interesting what they do with the draw (everyone plays each other 2 or 3 times or somewhere in between), final 4 system, finals played at suburban grounds, and promote the game better at schools/clinics, etc.
Perversely, the State Government bailout that created the SMA to manage Adelaide Oval means that the success of the SA AFL teams there is a direct benefit to the SANFL (and SACA).
Interesting times ahead.
