Yeah thats the tough part, he certainly has the record to back it up.

Although I will say, and this extends beyond Blighty, it annoys me when the former stars of the game are called into the brainstrust on whats best for it going forward. To start with, the game has changed extensively since their days and secondly the game is nothing without supporters, who should probably be engaged more than they are. How often are Lethal, Blighty etc (all bonafide legends mind you), opening their wallets to get to a game? Even their grub and drink would be catered for.

Here is my suggestion for when the Power and Crows transition to a full AFL Reserves competition, or join the VFL.

The aim would be for the SANFL competition to be the pinnacle of grass roots football in this State. I believe there is still passion for grass roots football amongst the people, not so much "development" in senior competition.

Firstly, create 6 new junior clubs servicing all regions of Country SA and Metro Adelaide in the mould of the NAB U18 Cup over in Victoria. These are Development Clubs and players will feed through to the AFL and SANFL from here, mainly.

SANFL clubs to have all grades align with SANFL Juniors (i.e. ages 7 to 17).

The SANFL to consist of 8 current clubs and Grand Finalists of Adelaide Footy League Division 1 in first year after Crows and Power exit, keeping a ten team competition.

From each season forward from there, there would be opportunity for every club involved in a "major" competition in SA to reach the SANFL.

The SANFL Grand Final would be shifted back to the October Long Weekend and all Country and Metro competitions would have their Grand Finals on the last weekend in August, allowing the Premiers of each competition/region a chance to play a knockout 4 weeks of football, culminating in a Final on SANFL Grand Final Day to gain promotion to the SANFL.

The SANFL competition would consist of the strongest 10 clubs in the State forever more and in September you'd have not only the Finals of the SANFL, but a Champions League of sorts, as well. That should ensure the Grand Final remains a significant event with Statewide interest.

This 4-week "Champions League" to gain promotion to the SANFL would be the premiers, or best teams, from the following regions and leagues, as well as the bottom placed SANFL team who could keep their place in the SANFL by winning:

1. SANFL Wooden Spooner
2. Adelaide Footy League Div 1 Premier
3. Southern League Premier
4. Great Southern League Premier
5. Hills Div 1 Premier
6. Barossa Light & Gawler Premier
7. Riverland Premier
8. River Murray Premier
9. Adelaide Plains Premier
10. Whyalla Premier
11. Spencer Gulf Premier
12. Yorke Peninsula Premier
13. Western Border Premier
14. Port Lincoln Premier
15. Winner of Mid South East vs KNT
16. Winner of North Eastern vs Northern Areas

An AFL reserves competition isn’t happening anytime soon

Not with a Tassie team, a 20th team and the AFLW.

Plus a lot of those premier teams wouldn’t beat a SANFL 18s team

(Whyalla especially its putrid)

None of those teams are beating any SANFL side. The best ones may be competitive against the bottom reserves teams.

None of those would want to or be able to play in the SANFL. Need ground improvements, staff, coaches players and money. It also destroys the league they come from.

And a not too small a problem, the 8 SANFL clubs own the league.

And wait a sec the NEFL beat both Adelaide Plains and YP leageus in the senior zone carnival this year so why we in a playoff game to make it lol

Just imagine though if 100 safooty posters took the time to get work off and go down and make their feelings heard.

What a statement that would be despite it being at a time that isn't very suitable.

what happened if Lobethal say, won promotion to the SANFL? It would cause untold issues with the Hills Football League.
They would need to just about recruit a new team to be viable at SANFL level. Some of their best players are well past their SANFL form and fitness, Bampton, Riley and Grigg for example. Their ground would need certain upgrades . Would anyone financially bankroll those improvements on the basis they might stay in the comp for 1 year maybe. Lobethal fan base would have to expand somehow, which could impact on Sturt and Norwood most, who would then complain about detrimental impact of Hills side making it. Unlikely though to have much impact as Sturt and Norwood are rusted on 100+year old clubs with immense history. If a regional side made it the complications of travel and getting players to wherever would be impractical.
Only possible way it would work would be what they did before, where Centrals and Woodville were selected, given a commitment, and spent a few years in SANFL Reserves, before graduating. But I don't know who those teams would be now :?

The best ammo and country sides would struggle to get within 10 goals of most SANFL reserves sides

not to mention the small problem clubs would have to find at least another $100 000 to pay for the increased salary cap not mention go from turning over $200-400K a year to upwards of $2 Mill

It's a nice theory and work distraction but there more chance of $1 beers at Adelaide oval next year than this happening

I'm not so convinced with that....our mail medalist last year played SANFL reserves this year and came third in the reserves Magarey.

I'm not sure the gap is anywhere near as big as it once was.

Then throw in Campbell Combe who could go back play country for 3 years and then win the league Magarey in his second year back of SANFL football.

That's two examples from the NEFL and NAFA that wouldn't be in anyone tops 5 strongest country comp lists.

I am.

I dont deny that with each country side there's potentially at least one or two League footballers (Coombe) as you pointed out and another two to four ressies players (Longbottom) as you cited who could play decent Ressies football but the bottom half of each side wouldn't even get a an invite to train with a senior squad and even be a supplementary senior list player at a SANFL club

Thats the difference and why Jim is right, it's not the top players in a country side its the bottom 10 that are going to result in a 10 goal thumping by a SANFL Ressies team to most country and metropolitan A grade teams.

Even PAC would who played in the Div 1 GF would struggle. yep they've got four league quality players (such as Curran, Trengove, Pitt - like all SANFL Ressies sides have) and then they got reserve grade strugglers like Perryman at the Bays from six years ago. Chuck in Jolly with his fitness issues and you a reserve grade standard side at best.

Which sanfl ressies side had players as good as Curran or Trengove?
Or Sam Gray from Port Districts?

No way is Port Districts a 10 goal worse side than the bottom sanfl reserves team.

20 years ago there was a big gap but the standard of the sanfl ressies is ordinary at best these days.

It’s why the sanfl ressies should be abolished and sanfl clubs aligned to ammo clubs more closely.

Agree the top end of a grade clubs would make up for the lack of depth. Especially if we are comparing gun a grade team versus bottom ressies side. I’m
Only talking about high performing country and div 1 teams, ones that are annilating their comps.

We even had a 17 year old a grader from last year who kicked 8 goals in a ressies game for the Eagles this year. He wouldn’t of been rated in our top 10 players based on current ability…..potential is through the roof though as per his Eagles league debut this year.

Lochie Wilsdon was a really good a grader for us but not mail medal winner or anything he kicked 8 in a league game last year and played in the grand final on the weekend all within two years.

I look at north Clare from last year had Jackson O’Brien, Tom Stevens, Dallas Hill, Nick Prokopec, Anthony Simpson all serviceable ressies players at sanfl level and couldn’t even make the 4

Any my examples are from a comp not many would rate highly

I didn’t say all teams would win by 10 goals, I said most.
I’d be shocked though if Port Districts won more than 1 or 2 games for the season if they played SANFL reserves
