Great game of footy. Went down to the wire! The premiership quarter was the difference.

North's AFL imports were dangerous early. White, Perrie and Lonie all kicking goals and looking too big - White in particular was dominant against Redden. Our home grown AFL players in Vince and McGregor evened it up a little. As "scoop" corona mentioned yesterday, Grocke didn't play and that was a huge loss.

North looked the better side for much of the first half. I thought the damage was limited a little at quarter time, being only 13 points down. We kicked the first three of the 2nd quarter before North hit back to take a 20 point lead at half time. I thought we looked heavy in the legs and North were potent up forward and winning the contest around the ground. At half time I wasn't too optimistic, but then again, I though Sturt looked the better side at 3/4 time last week.

The 3rd quarter was Eagles footy back to its best. Pressure, pressure and more pressure. North started to look a little shaky and Passador came into the game to end up being the dominant forward on the ground and kick 5 goals. Lomas and Fairclough lead the way and Jarrad and Treeby started to win their wings. A goaless quarter to North and a 3 goal lead to the Eagles at the last change.

Eagles weathered the early North dominance and actually kicked the first goal of the last quarter. I thought at that point we had it won. It wasn't until the 9 minute mark that North scored their first goal of the half. From there it was game on. I thought Sporn was really dominant on ball and created from in close. He was North's most damaging player IMO. Kick for kick the Eagles determination won through in the end and it was ironic that North's worst player (Coulter) ended up making the mistake that cost them the game.

Best players for the Eagles I thought were Pete Fiacchi, Powell and McKenzie. Schwarze and Symmons were both very quiet. Symmons really needs a rest IMO.

Just a mention to the umpires, get on top of the push in the back rule. North players were smart today in diving forward at every opportunity and most of the times the umpires fell for it. A couple of times North were caught holding the ball. Seemed to depend which umpire was adjudicating. Realise when a player dives FFS!

Go the Eags!

Think your umpiriing assesment might just bring a few responses tonight Aerie.

PS Well done Eagles. No radio coverage so had t settle for posts. Read like a tough, tight game.

FWIW, I thought the frees were about even, I don't think that either team had a better run IMO.

Mate, its not about the free kick count being even, its where they're given.
Ive made a comment on the Roost but will save myself from making a comment on here until I watch the game in its entirity on TV tonight so I might be missing for a couple of hours as Im going to make some notes.
Great to cach up with a couple of regular Eagles posters on here before the game in the Club rooms, LEH was very confident still that Sturt woulnd't win another game, whoopsy!

Yeah, I guess so, but there really shouldn't be a difference in interpretation of the rules based on where the play is unless you are near the boundary line. If indeed you are thinking about the same decision(s) I am. ;)

CD has some questions to be answered too.
I got there at 1/4 time of the reserves, was easily in the first 300 people in the ground but no donut.
Some club forgot to look after the media!
It'll take a lot to make up for my missing donut CD!!!!!!

That's the interesting part about it, first post I saw on the Roost was someone at the opposite end of the ground to me today who had exactly the same opinion, he was a little more 'animated' than I am but I will be commenting objectively after I watch the replay.
Positive to pull out of it was IMHO North were comfortably the better side in 3 of the 4 quarters, Im actually more confident of the double chance now than I was before the game, we wont have the things go against today again, mind you, they're famous last words. :?

North were the better side for a lot of the match, though we did have a couple of moments in the other three quarters, but that's it apart from the third.

the eagles got their matchups right in the back half after 1/4 time which made things harder for north.....

in fact north went inside their forawrd 50 a couple of times more than the eagles for the match.....

Luke Jarrad was outstanding....how this bloke is not on an afl list has got me beat......very dangerous on his wing and when dragged back into the backlines held north up plenty of times......great penetrating kick....

Lomas has to be the best crumbing rover going around at the moment......

little stewart has to be the best back pocket going around too.....

Symonds did an ankle in the second qtr and further injured it in the last....thats why he was quiet.....

Mr magic Vince was aslo damaging......

great win but pooly umpired!

EAGLES EAGLES EAGLES EAGLES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BEWARE TOP 3 the EAGLES coming to get ya !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a game I'll try and have a say.
Arriving at Woody oval to find that two of the EAGLES best forwards not playing I was thinking the EAGLES were in big trouble. And in fact I was correct because the EAGLES missed mainly Grocke from their forward line.
North showed in the first quarter and the last part of the second quarter they were by the far the faster team. And the fact they were so much quicker they could deliver the ball into the forward line better than the EAGLES.The Eagles let themselves down in front of goals ,some shots were unlucky like the bouncing ball hitting post .But some like Luke Jarrads(i'm trying not to be critical after that great goal the week before) needed to be kicked but they weren't.

At halftime talking with other EAGLES fans the EAGLES looked down and almost out.North as stated above were the far better faster high scoring team.Hell even Ian Perrie looked good , so good in fact his AFL coach left the ground leaving only Alan stewart to watch another 1/4 of SANFL football.

So what happened at halftime I have no idea but something changed.
Mackenzie went down back .Passador was moved to FF and the ball was getting delivered correctly into the eagles forwardline .Oh and North lost its discipline a good example being Coulter giving away a 25 metre so Passador could kick another goal. The EAGLES changed a gear and started to play the game the way liek to play footy hard at the ball. The likes of Jarrad Treeby and Cica lifted litlle lomas was running them around and more importantly the eagles kicked 6 goals. And the EAGLES home grown players in Vince and macgregor lifted.

Three quarter time I was starting to think the EAGLES were back .But good old north never stop running but thankyou Adelaide football club for dropping Ian Perrie .Three times the ball went into Norths Forward line and he was near the ball three times he stuffed up or couldn't get his body to move quick enough and this resulted in three points being rushed . But North would not be denied they kept coming and took the lead . Then the ball goes down to the EAGLES forward line and that North player getting caught with the ball .When is holding the ball not holding the ball didn't really matter because little Lomas swooped in like a true eagle and kicked the goal .

The lead was 9 points and North kicked another late goal and were I was sitting we were calling for the siren it would not come !!!!

But it did and the EAGLES win a very close game that was gone at halftime won back in the third quarter lost and regained in the last term.
And I am thankful I take heartpills because that was a nail bitter of a game .Well done EAGLES what a win .

You would have to say that match was a fantastic advertisement for the SANFL, being on TV. Both teams had the upper hand during the match, and overall the brand of footy shown by both sides today (contested, tough football) is a trademark of the best league outside the AFL. I thought that North were slightly better at the clearances and when they got the ball moving in the open, but I reakon our pressure when the ball was in play, in close (not at a stoppage), probably won that department overall.

I like to single out a piece of the action during the match, and this brought about our 14th goal, and the goal in effect, won the match as North kicked another afterwards to bring the gap back to three points. I can't remember who the North player was, but he took a long time to get rid of the ball from a mark. I think Passador knew that his time had ran out before play on was called, so he started to sprint to get there. Play on was called, and Passador laid the tackle, Fairclough picked the ball up and goaled. A classic definition of the term "footy smarts".

Also, if you are to win a match of football, you don't need someone like Josh Coulter to give away a goal like what he did in the third. A close match can be decided on who is the more disciplined team, and it only takes one player to cost a goal like Coulter did. I wouldn't be placing the loss squarely on an Eagles player if that was the other way around (and the result), but you don't need a player to give away a goal like that in a close match.

me2.that decision where shuey got pinged holding the ball will rot in my head for years.just after we hit the front, with momentum,he grabs the ball instantaniously grabbed and the f**** head of an so called umpire pauses, obv thinks im on stage here ill be the star ,holding the ball        i dont make it a habit of bagging those ******* ***** but ffs gifted the eagles a goal that was never there.and that was the worst 1 of many that the eagles got today.we were robbed all day.any eagles brave enough to say they were gifted the game?watch the replay and u will see my point.sanlf umpires at woodville today GO AND GET ****** U ROBBING SONS OF BITCHES.

<editted by Wedgie with lots of swear words replaced by ****s, settle down GR!! PS It was Sporn that got caught holding the ball>

No offence mate, but I think Kenny McGregor more than covered for Grocke and Kenny would be a slightly better player in most people's books Im sure?

Funniest thing I head today when taking some pics was a North supporter abusing Richard Williams for the poor umpiring decision he'd just made. Bit rough considering he wasn't even one of the 3 umpires and is actually at Elizabeth tonight umpiring!

North lost the game by playing unaccountable football in the third quarter - good comeback in the last as we looked shot by 3/4 time but no point in being the best team for 3/4 and lose it in 1/4! That loss will cost us the double chance.

I can't fathom how any Eagles supporters would say the umpiring went both ways today. I don't recall seeing one North goal from a free quick which resulted in a set shot at goal but I can count at least 3 for the Eagles. Watch the replay for those Eagles supporters who still have their rose coloured glasses on. I suppose I should accept that the umpiring is going to be crap but unlike last week when they were crap both ways, today they umpired only for the home team.

Maybe the SANFL directed the umpires today as they obviously want the "huge masses" (note sarcasm  ) that follow the Eagles to bump up the League coffers in at least 2 finals games? I would imagine the only time the Eagles fams out number the opposition at their home ground is when they play South or West and even that would be line ball.
