Sadly, I just heard the host club deal announced on the radio news.
5 year deal beginning in 2014, player movements to begin next year.

VERY sad day for state footy!

Fate Acompli, The SANFL as always, will not hold out against the rolling catastrophe that is the AFL.

That in its own small way, is the feared deathknell of the Port Adelaide Magpies, as I think the Power will not operate 3 teams, just the Power in the AFL and the Power Reserves in the SANFL.

The big difference in SA is the Candy Crows can't be trusted and Port Flowers are that low and broke, they won't get anywhere near the SANFL comp now :D
It's DEAD as an issue now and both clubs have done it to themselves which is fantastic! :)

My thoughts are exactly the opposite, Both Power and Crows are owned by the SANFL and to get back in the good books with the AFL some favours need to be streamlined or, will need to roll over on a few issues, the AFL seconds teams for both being aligned within the SANFL League comp is sure to be high on that list.

My name is Go Legs, and I hope what I say is not the case, but gut feel tells me it will be so.

Cant see it happening here, I think the SANFL presidents have a lot more power than their WAFL counterparts and it would be voted out.
Send the pricks to the VFL if they want reserves sides

I didn't beleive it until I read it but here it is.

http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/sport/a/-/sport/15261650/2014-wafl-kick-off-for-eagles-dockers-as-cash-seals-the-deal/

30 pieces of silver is now $100,000

In a strange case of history repeating itself once again (as in 1986) the WAFL has caved in first and the pessimist in me says it will only be a matter of time before the SANFL has to follow.

Enjoy the SANFL next season, who knows what lies ahead in 2014 and beyond.

Fantastic news. As was mentioned in the article, it's about maturing as a football state. I can see some growing up needed around here as well.

Phil this SANFL v the old VFL stuff is a bit tiresome..... the reality is we were always going to join too - WA just handled it very badly. In retrospect we did too by holding off to long then letting Port get its nose in when in reality no state league club had the financial power to play in an expanded VFL.

The VFL have already stated the will NOT take an Adelaide or Port reserves team.
National reserves are NOT on the AFL agenda.

The SANFL is not powerful anymore as it has lost its financial security and Football Park is on its way out.

Looks like they will be playing each other every week because i cant see any chance of them playing in any grade of the SANFL.

I think the comparison is a valid one.

This is about a major change to the nature of the state league competition.

The last time such a major change occurred was when the AFL came to WA & SA.

On that occassion WA blinked first

Of this occassion re maintaining the integrity of our state league competition, WA blinked first.

It not about SANFL v VFL/AFL, it is about

- the SANFL still being a competition in its own right where every league side is 100% foucussed on winning the premiership

- its about media coverage being about all the clubs and games not just focussed on the crows / powers reserves sides which will be what happen in years to come.

- you only have to see coverage (what there is of it) of the modern VFL to see that it is branded as a reserves comp. I never want the SANFL to end up that way.

- maintaining the Magpies as "existing" to win premierships. If the Magpies league become the Port reserves and their #1 focus becomes devloping Power players then why would you need a Magpies reserves or Under 18's or a zone ... over time I can only see it being the end of the Magpies at first as we know them, eventually in total.

Of interest from the article is that there appears to have been no to minimal imput / vote from the 7 "non aligned" WAFL clubs.

I don't understand how the SANFL has lost it's financial security .. Sure they're probably hocked up to the eyeballs at the moment, but the minute Footy Park becomes available that land at West Lakes is worth a mint, surely they can provide their own security with money generated from it?

Saying the WAFL blinked first is very simplistic view of what went on.
The SANFL actually investigated national football before the WAFL - an Adelaide Football Club in the VFL was proposed by Don Roach in the early 80s but the VFL said no. The WAFL joined the VFL first but messed it up terribly by not fully understanding the situation in Victoria & embracing private ownership. SA were lucky they got to look at WCE mistakes... but then messed up terribly themselves with Port Adelaide.

This blinking first thing..... FFS we are beyond this.... The VFA resisted the VFL more than anyone - to the point of expelling clubs if they even talked to the VFL or its clubs - and now they are completely under their control.

Because it has an AFL club on life support that sent it into debt.

sale of the land will clear some debts..... but after that the SANFL will own nothing and have a small office at Adelaide Oval

The money it threw in to save the Power would/should have been a loan or should be recouped in the sale of Port's license when that occurs .. There should be $$ coming from the sale of the Crows license at some point in time.

The land at West Lakes should be worth many, many millions of dollars.

I would have thought the SANFL's biggest challenge is keeping all of it's clubs afloat long enough for the above monies to be realised?

I've been thinking the same thing. I'm sure a couple of them are literally hanging in there until when/if the SANFL are in a position to
put some proceeds their way.
