Dont know the technicalities or difficulty of it but would love to see the ABC try and use a live ticker for around the ground scores in this weeks telecast.

Would add alot to the drama of the coverage imho.

THE SANFL has accused the ABC of being in breach of its Australian content charter by planning to dump local football coverage.

General manager of football operations Darren Chandler was critical of comments made by ABC head Mark Scott on Adelaide ABC radio yesterday which he said misrepresented viewing figures and the position of the SANFL.

In a submission to a parliamentary inquiry into planned changes to ABC programming which includes dumping lawn bowls, Mr Chandler said the ABC would not be able to meet its Australian content requirements if it dumped the SANFL and equivalent West Australian Football League coverage.

He said it would also have ignored a charter requirement of considering what commercial and community coverage would be available to the SANFL if ABC coverage was dropped.

By extension, the ABC would be increasing its average local content by showing replays of ALL football leagues late at night like it used to on ABC2. It is ludicrous to have axed this coverage in the first place.

Why are the ABC concerned about ratings? They're not selling advertising, they're not supposed to be competing with the commercial networks, they're supposed to be providing an alternative.

Pretty smart move criticising the organisation you want to extend an agreement with.

If I was the ABC I'd tell Chandler to stick it up his jumper and show some other Australian sport or content thats cheaper to produce to cover the charter.

I agree Wedgie - it seems strange to go on the attack at this point in time, at least in public.

The ABC is East Coast centric. The powers that be wouldn't even know about SANFL let alone give 2 hoots about it.
We will need to get used to it not being covered just like no replays on ABC2 any more. The same applies to WAFL and bowls.
If the Sydney based chiefs don't play or follow it its gone. Sad

I think you're being unfair there. It's not just about SA or WA losing footy, they're talking about replacing the entire saturday afternoon local sport slot, which includes Rugby league.

The question about ratings is valid though. No point producing something nobody's going to watch. 5k is an awfully small number of viewers. I know Chandler has disputed that but I'd be curious to know how long Chandler's 44k viewers were watching for and what sort of average viewership we have.

I for one, would be very disappointed to see it end though. But if there simply isn't the interest to warrant it staying on air then it's not hard to understand the ABC wanting to try something else in it's slot.

Just because a programme has a small audience doesn't mean it's not worth making. Radio National and Triple J get tiny audiences but often provide coverage/views/music that wouldn't otherwise be aired. The alternative is that as the relentless 'dumbing down' continues we'll only get served up lowest common denominator stuff.

The Sydney Rugby Union comp is in the firing line so then all state league coverage have been grouped as one. Then the bowls coverage is under threat.

If Sydney pull the plug on Union then it is almost certain that all similar programs through out the nation will follow as Sydney represents all of Australia ;)

I don't think so. No doubt the Sydney chiefs probably love ballet and opera so that's what every one will get now on Saturday afternoons. So much for ratings. The ABC programmers on both TV and Radio wouldn't have a clue!!

Things are so unbelivably tight at the public broadcasters right now.

Some will be disappointed to know that several arts shows have already been cut, which has got a-lot of people up in arms.

There's a little revolution going on at the ABC whereby in-house production is being outsourced left, right and centre to free up already limited funds.

No production company will take on state footy because it would be akin to pi$$ing your money up against the wall.

Reakon the ABC will inevitably have to become a defacto commercial network...
