Tragedy - A disastrous event, especially one involving distressing loss or injury to life.

football injuries are tragedies there right up there with kids getting cancer, people dying from natural disasters, starvation in Africa and world poverty

To answer your statement, yes, football injuries can absolutely be tragic and we've had enough tragedies on the football field for it not to be dismissed lightly.
