Sounds as if Fuller gets to run his own ship the way he wants. Good luck to him. Someone will eventually turn South Adelaide around for the better. Maybe it will be him?

Lets face it with the club finishing bottom and in respect to its form over the past few seasons, Ron actually really cant do any worse, even a finish in eighth spot has to be considered an improvement!

All coaches have their strengths and weaknesses(although I'm still trying to find Roy Lairds!)
Ron will instill discipline, structure, competitiveness and a culture of playing for the club. He has an eye for young talent (important for South if they use a youth policy) and the Eagles experienced a very stable environment for 9 years (South would be desperate for this scenario).
Ron had his favourites though and I can't see this changing at South. He also didn't relate as well to the more senior players. I don't think you could say that he was a players coach at the Eagles. I also feel that his style of football needed a certain type of player and South will take awhile to get the squad to successfully play the way he wants them too.
On the whole, I thought Ron was good for the Eagles but it was time for a change, probably in 2008. South will certainly improve under him.

A great appointment, and definately a man who commands respect!
Along with many other panther fans I urge the board to be proffesional and not amatuer in their attitudes! This bloke has the potential to bring us out of the mire we have been in for the past 17+ years!
The board do not coach teams so leave the coaches to do what they do best!!
This is step "one"twords becoming a respected football club!!!!!

I am South's biggest critic - they are a joke.

This is there best appointment ever.

No excuses now - they will become a force like Centrals I believe.

Sure, but for 5 years! A lot can go wrong in that span of time so why do something that not even AFL clubs do? A huge risk IMO.

Have South taken another step backwards by selecting Fuller as their new coach. He's proven at his time at the Eagles he has no plan b. I don't think Jesus Christ himself could resurect the Panthers let alone Ron Fuller. Should make for an interesting night on Friday at the Club Champion awards.

I think its a good appointment, though i find it interesting that a part of BKs interview said he expected South to play finals no later than 2011, and RF has a 5 year contract, and it seems loke BK will take no responsibility if his "reasonable" expectation isnt met. Does this mean if no finals by start of 2012, RF is back to putting out fires?

I'm with you. I know, as a Richmond supporter, that signing a coach for five years and thinking he's the saviour, and he's got all the time and resources to turn the club around, doesn't always work out for the best (see Terry Wallace). Good appointment for South, but doesn't guarantee future success just yet.

Fair comment eaglehas landed, you being an Eagles fan would of seen a heck of a lot more of than Ron than most of us.
But I dont think plan B should even be considered as yet,Ron doesnt need one for now,his main priority would be to actually get a decent plan A happening, which from all reports and statistically[gf appearences and win] he is good at,and South fans would be excited to see how it comes together.

I hate to spoil eveyones warm and fuzzies but I think this is the most ridiculous appointment in history. Hopefully I am proven wrong but why would you do an appointment for 5 years. Has a SANFL coach ever been appointed for 5 years before in their first contract at a new club ?

The press release from South stipulated that Ron withdrew himself from the selection committe half way through the process when he realised he was keen to apply himself. All above board in that regard...

haha this is ridiculous, he would have known who the other applicants were and what they would bring...dodgy!

I was thinking exactly that.

At my next job interview I'll ask if I can sit on the board that decides it for half the process first!

PS Any truth in the rumour that Boyd has asked for a transfer already?[/quote]

So has anyone heard anymore on the James Boyd situation ???

Dont think Ron would be too fussed about blokes wanting to transfer already..if that is the case. He will only want guys at the club who are 100% committed to the cause, not players dictating what goes on....he coaches, they play...end of story.
Trust the process.

What I have heard from the club is that he was signed several weeks ago! :D :D :D

From the SAFC,

Panthers’ list signed for 2010

South Adelaide Football Club is pleased to announce that it has re-signed all its existing out-of-contract players for 2010.
CEO Ben Kavenagh said it was encouraging that the Club had been able to re-sign its list so early.
“It demonstrates to a prospective coach that we have a united playing group that is determined to turn things around next year. It also allows us to focus on adding a couple more quality recruits, of which we have already signed two.”
The Panthers will shortly announce the names of the two signings, but is respectful of the club commitments these players need to complete before doing so.
Players contracted for 2010 are:
James Boyd
, Michael Handby, Ben Warren, Dylan Williams, Mitch Sandery, Brad Crabb, Tarak Redigolo, Nick McKenna, Lee Schmidt, Alex Splitt, Anthony Carlile, Adam Cockshell, Nathan Lyons, Peter Rolfe, Josh Thewlis, Jake Veide, Leigh Ryan, Jak Kennedy-Hunt, Craig Parry, Chris Minns, Nick Murphy, Sam Elliott, Ben Yeomans, Curtis Perrey, James Turner, Tom Carroll, Jacob Crate.
Players that have announced their retirement either during or following the 2009 season are Jason Torney, Matthew Smith, Ben Neagle and Tom Hateley.

I think that James signed a 2 year deal last year, so he wouldn't have resigned this year as he has 2010 to run on current contract.
Having said that, there was a rumour that he wasn't happy this year under Sambo and was looking to move. Perhaps the change of coach has changed his thinking and perhaps he wants to stay. Then again he could be sick of the continual stuff ups down there and want a fresh start?
