Magpies lose star trio
STORMY TIMES AHEAD: Brad Murray will not play at Port next year
PORT Adelaide Magpies will start next season without its captain, best and fairest and leading goalkicker with Brad Murray and Joel Perry deciding to follow Corey Ah Chee out the door at Alberton.
The exit of the star trio, who all finished in the top five at the Magpies’ best and fairest count this month, leaves coach Tony Bamford with a thread-bare squad to work with in his first season.
Best and fairest winner Murray has opted to return to Victoria, where he will live and work in Melbourne while playing for Echuca in the Goulburn Valley Football League.
The 27-year-old, who worked as a development officer at Port, said he had lost the motivation to play at state league level.
``It just got a bit much this season, playing and then having to go to work every day and talk about footy as well,’’ Murray said.
``I just want to take a step back and play without the demands of SANFL level.
``I’ve also got work back in Melbourne working as a mature-age carpentry apprentice.’’
Perry, who kicked 43 goals this season the third most in the competition in the minor round will also return to Victoria.
Despite the departures, Magpies football manager Bob Clayton said there was cause for optimism at Port, which finished in eighth position this season.
``There’s a lot of light at the end of the tunnel,’’ Clayton said.
``OK, we’ll have to recruit a couple of players no question, but with the quality of the young guys coming through there’s some exciting times ahead.’’
Clayton confirmed ruckman James Meiklejohn and midfielder Jeremy Clayton would honour the remaining year on their contracts and be back in 2010.

Glenelg retirements: Cranston and Block to follow Fisher?
GONE: Adam Fisher, pictured here with Port's Jarrod Young, has retired.
GLENELG is at risk of losing three quarters of its starting onball unit, with Lucas Block and Trevor Cranston a chance to follow retired best and fairest winner Adam Fisher out the door at the Bay.
Fisher, a dual club champion award winner for the Tigers, called an end to his career last week after finally succumbing to a debilitating knee injury.
The 25-year-old said he was disappointed to finish without tasting the ultimate success but his body had simply had enough.
``I don’t have much cartilage left in the right knee,’’ Fisher said.
``It would flare up after every game which takes its toll mentally.
``It’s disappointing to go out the way we did but personally to win two best and fairests, including one in my last season, and also help the club work its way in to a strong position has been satisfying.’’
The 92-game player, who joined the Tigers in 2005 from Melbourne’s rookie list, said he would stay in Adelaide.
He is unsure whether to play locally but is toying with the idea of joining former Glenelg team-mate Marcus Burdett at Mount Compass in the Great Southern Football League.
Fisher’s retirement is a huge blow for the Tigers who were eliminated in straight sets from this year’s finals after winning their second straight minor premiership.
And the losses might not end with the blonde-haired tyro, with ruckman Trevor Cranston and midfielder Lucas Block also weighing up their SANFL futures.
Glenelg football operations manager Ken Applegarth said Cranston was considering returning to Victoria.
``He told us last year that this season could be his last but he’s also now thinking he might have some unfinished business,’’ Applegarth said.
``Trevor always takes his time at the end of the season. He’s getting married this weekend so footy is the last thing from his mind.
``He’ll let us know of his decision when he’s back from his honeymoon.’’
Block, who suffers from groin problems, will wait until meeting with club doctor Marc Cesana before making a decision on his future.
``He’s been having problems with his groins and is having them assessed,’’ Applegarth said.
``He’s also got the opportunity to expand his (carpentry) business so he’s got a bit to think about.’’
Dr Cesana returns from holiday in the next month.
