Just a couple of calls that could have gone either way I guess, though must disagree with your first call re Dutschke's goal. Happy to point out by PM exactly why if you're interested, though with that camera angle (same end) really hard to
for sure in either of those two cases IMO.
Whilst our opinions on the above are academic, what is for sure is that both Tony Dey and the goal umpire involved in Grima's goal should be made to re-read Rule 12.1.5 (see page 43 of
this) and write it out 100 times on the blackboard before leaving training this week. Should be
basic stuff at this level.
That law, as I understand it, is in respect to the goal line and the posts - has the ball wholly crossd the line and which two posts the ball traversed between.
Rule 12.1.3 (d) pretty well covers the cracks on that one.
Rule 12.1.5
Goal Umpire to Judge Goal or Behind
"(a) The goal Umpire shall decide whether a Goal or Behind has been scored but may, before deciding, consult with the field or boundary Umpires."Essentially, if the Goal Umpire has any doubts then
they may initiate consultation with either the Boundary or the Central Umpire. The law provided
no providence for Dey to "over-rule" (this isn't tennis), as the law continues,
"The decision of the goal Umpire shall be final."Make no mistakes, the goal umpire
had made his decision - he was patting his chest preparing to signal a behind which, (just before Dey chimed in)
"
The goal Umpire shall only signal that a Goal or Behind has been scored when the field Umpire signals “All Clear” or “Touched All Clear”, as the case may be." Though this, far as a goal umpire is concerned, only relates to
signalling the decision that has
already been made.
Yes, the Goal Umpire can, for example, reverse a goal
before the centre bounce if they realise they've stuffed up but this call is theirs alone.
Note: I probably should point out that I'd be of the same opinion if it had gone the other way, as it's ultimately just one call in a match, albeit an odd one that's had a bit of attention. Dey should have butted out, the Goal Umpire should have stood his ground.
Edit: reinstated original post, just thought it was a bleary-eyed rant at the time.
