In saying that, even with these payments Norwood were still under the salary cap for 2012. I guess its a bit like the Tippett salary cap "mistake"

If Norwood didnt notify the SANFL of the contract change its a pretty stupid error, and $50K is a pretty big penalty for a stupid error on the managements behalf.

Just wondering why you would need to change the contract from playing to marketing? Is this normal for any player who has a season ending injury?

Would it be to reallocate more player payments to another player?
Players win touches, Teams win matches, Clubs win Premierships.

I believe they did a similar thing with Eagleton when he retired. He had a year left on his contract so rather than have his payments go towards the Total Player Payments (TPP) they were allowed to move some of it onto a marketing contract which isn’t counted toward TPP. I guess due to McGuiness being captain they wanted to look after him since he wasn’t going to be receiving any match payments for a massive chuck of the season.

Not sure if other players with LTI at Norwood, or other SANFL clubs, are given the same help.

A lot of player have their contract written in such a way that they only only receive full game match payments when they play a league game and get basically nothing when out injured or in the reserves - perhaps the player in discussion had a contract like this and having a long term injury the club needed to change so that the player and his wife could buy food -- I honestly do not know but do know several players in the past who were caught in this type of contract situation

I believe your club has the most recent list of 'full time' SANFL footballers.

Doyle and Phillips spring to mind......

maybe he does have a job outside of football now. But in his first season with Norwood he did not!

A bit harsh on Flipper, he is 25 now. He has been on an AFL list for the last two years. I dont really know about his employment in his early 20's but he might have been studying or just not doing much like alot of other guys in their early 20's.

I thought Phillips was on the Rookie list last year at Port? Hard to have a crack at him being a full time footballer then!
