So Sturt are going to have arguably find an extra $20 000 a year minimum to put a league side on the field in 2014

They wil have to find at least double that based on the NAFC allocation this year for AFL players and the "replacement real money cost" for 2014 and we have well under half per game based on this season compared to the SFC.

I agree my $200 a game is based on the minimum league player payment as I understand it to be. So the minimum is ~$20 000 based on playing juniors and amateurs/country recruits. To replace them quality, as you say, they will have to at least double that.

For all SANFL clubs the AFL players are merely a token amount against the cap. Next year all SANFL clubs will have to find real $$$ to replace those players lost (fair enough too as they aren't our players) and for some clubs, not just Sturt, that will be an issue.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

You'd think a club in that predicament might have paid a little more respect to its members throughout this process, no?

Genuine question.

How are the Bays going Dutchy? Rumour is they are the ones who are struggling to pay the electricity bill. Have you heard anything?

No I haven't heard that one at all.

On financials held they are doing fine, but we hear bugger all from the club apart from the AGM

Sturt lost it's line of credit re the Castle Tavern is my "mail". That venture from what I can see has been a real disappointment for the SFC.

Maybe you're right. Hope not.

Sponsors of the club want to see a return for thier $$$ and that means a strong membership and good attendances at matches, should Sturt games fall below what they are now, they will struggle to get interest from sponsors, its worth pointing out that they are already struggling greatly in this area. Betraying their own supporters and selling out the rest of the SANFL supporters that did not want the AFL in the SANFL will not help thier case and will likely do them far more damage than 50k per year. I for one will not deal with Envestra nor any other sponsors they have whilst the AFL remain in the SANFL.

Glenelg ARE the third club in real financial trouble also along with Sturt & West

The sub lease to the Frickers is what has made this business untenable. The deal that was set up initially was extremely flawed and simply should not have been entertained.
The fact remains it happened and we have to deal with it now the best way forward for the club.

I thought Sturt were getting decent coin (although nothing sensational) out of the Castle up to a couple of years ago?

I guess things can change fairly quickly, but it's hardly what the club needs right now.

I remember OTR saying that when the deal was first done and some Sturt fans telling him he was clueless.

Now a bunch of people think I'm always sticking it into Sturt on anything...

BUT...

As I've mentioned in the last couple of AGM reviews, my belief is Sturt have busted their balls to try and get the Castle Tavern and Barzaar profitable and while they are both profitable now, they're not raking in the cash like the club would have liked.

My understanding is that Barzaar was pretty crap the first couple of years, but some serious work was done to turn it around and now a small but tidy profit is made. The Castle Tavern, I think, has gone the other way, it was relatively profitable early on, not a lot, but a reasonable amount, but that profit margin has slid despite the clubs best efforts and in my opinion, I believe they have really tried, but overall, combined, a small, tidy profit from both.

I'm not aware of any mistakes / issues with the way early contracts were set up, but again, I'd give the club a good pass mark here. They convinced me it wasn't through lack of trying or mis-management.

Barzaar is a brilliant venue, good food and nice atmosphere etc.but the wrong location for big gaming returns. Unley and surrounding suburbs is not like the areas where North, Centrals, Eagles and South gain their advantages from re gaming turnover.

Castle Tavern as someone else mentioned is still controlled under the deal with the SFC way too much by the Frickers.
