The state of football in Australia is nothing short of a disaster. Its hard to believe that so many so called South Australians jerk of to the power and crows when there are local clubs to support in the SANFL. As a kid growing up prior to AFL era i wuld go and watch norwood every week and the atmosphere at power and crows game is nothing compared to what the SANFL used to be. For all these years the SANFL has failed to stand up to the AFL and now they are at their mercy. The SANFL needs to take on the AFL and expand. Promote the comp and make it interesting again. Don't worry about the financial side of things because it will take care of itself. Half of the AFL/VFL clubs are on welfare but they continue to expand. Bigger is better!

Whilst I don't agree with him regarding the move to become a Crows reserves side, I reckon that he has a point about the fascination to be known as the 2nd best league in Australia... If Sturt either fall over or become a Crows B team, me, my wife and my kids are going to be lost to the SANFL and probably Aussie Rules in general.

What are people's thoughts re a direct debit donation to their club? In addition to my membership and season pass, I'd happily offer Sturt a direct debit of $10.00 per month if it meant securing their survival. If each of the 3,000 members from last year did likewise that would completely cover player payments for the season. All for the cost of a can of Coke a week. You wouldn't even notice $10.00 per month but it'd make a massive difference. I put this to the club but am yet to hear back (understanding they're probably rather busy at the moment!).

I thought that was the dumbest point in everything he said. Why wouldn't want to be the best league outside the afl you dumb old bassa.

Why not just survive until crows/port move to adelaide oval and sanfl sets up a sanfl future fund.

The agenda is being set so by years end the crows will look to "save" sturt as opposed to take them over.

Halbert you are a disgrace and everything that is wrong with footy in Sa.

It's one person's opinion, i don't doubt his motives, he loves the club, but it's alarmingly defeatist.
Plus if that really is the only option, i doubt many Sturt supporters would be rubbing their hands together in glee. It's not a solution in my eyes and it's not just an emotional issue, the practical issues are very significant too.

It's poor timing too given the focus is meant to be on debt demolition and public support. Saying you need to get into bed with an AFL club tends to blunt that message i would've thought. Why not give that every opportunity to run?

He is right about one thing though, membership drives are not the long term answer, they won't deliver the funding required. There still has to be something significant happen for long term survival and it will probably need the involvement of the SANFL in one way or another.

I was going on about this method at my own club years ago and had recently suggested it to some mates with regard to Sturt FC (or any other club in need of assistance).

Costs bugger all to get a Direct Debit agreement drawn up, and most likely there's someone involved with the club that can impart their expertise to get this done for nix .. Then the only cost becomes related to printing and bank fee's (which won't be much more than the club is already copping).

We run the bulk of our business this way and it's a relatively easy way of ensuring regular income hits our bank account, by known dates .. The hassles come when the DDR's bounce.

Have you pursued it with your club CC?

What like selling off land at west lakes for example and setting up a sanfl future fund with the proceeds.

When Norwood were in financial strife I direct debited $10 a week for 3 years. Then one day President Joe Tripodi walked over with a Paley, thanked me and told me to stop.

Do it again in a heartbeat if needed.

Did the same thing, and I guess that's the other point - No agreement required if supporters just get the clubs Bank Details and set up a scheduled periodic payments.

I gave the Dogs $200 the other day to join their 200 Club membership category...

Was thinking of getting a Double Blues membership as well...

Do it!

I've tried to do similar in reverse:
- Bought my SFC membership and home ticket
- Sent email to cdfc email asking if I can buy a home match ticket - so I can go to the odd game with family and I can't afford a whole membership thing - but got no response (2 weeks ago) :(

I think people are being a little harsh on Halbert... people need to think about the position he feels the club is in, he doesn't feel it has the ability to turn itself around and he's right about relying on the membership to bail them out every few years, that's not a long term financial strategy the club should depend upon.

I'm confident the members will rally and put $500K into the club over the coming 12-18 months, which will ensure it survives this season and next, but unfortunately, I just don't see the club making the right decisions and turning a profit thereafter and I think we'll be here again pretty soon, talking about the same stuff.

If there are other clubs out there that are losing money every year, year on year and yet their supporter base remains confident in the club turning it around, I'd like to hear how I can get that confidence.

I just don't have it...

... I'll admit it, after 20 years as a member and many more as a supporter, I just don't have faith in the club.
