stick your conferences, this is Australia. We have (now) an excellent 8 team football competition & We don't need to bugger it up and play around with it. It must be a good competition, AFL clubs want to play in it ;)

Here's a better idea. Port and the Crows take their players, gather them all together and then go and xxxx themselves.

I think both the crows and port are going to get a rude shock, when they find their reserve team is detrimental to their players development. I still fail to see how, callinan, redden, Henderson, tambling or any of othe other listed players development will be enhanced by a reserves team. They get all the over coaching they can handle during the week training with their afl team. Just another expense weve previously been told they can't afford.

Not content with posting that tripe about AFL conferences in a SANFL board on its own thread, you had to go and post it a second time - on a thread about AFL reserves teams in the SANFL?

You sir are a monumental halfwit, make no bones about it. Plonkers like beenreal and prickinit have nothing on you; they might post garbage but at least they have the basic sense to do it on a relevant forum and on a relevant thread. Seriously, push off to bigfooty. You'll be much more at home there, surrounded by people of similar intellectual ability who'll be all too happy to pat you on the back and laud your inane posts.

Congratulations, you just posted 2 sentences without using the ******** wit function, or is that just how you sign your name. Honestly, if the mods were serious they wouldn't allow that function, we all know what they are saying. If you don't have the kahunas to say it properly, then don't say it.

Kickinit, IT WILL NOT WORK BECAUSE THEY CANNOT FIT UNDER THE SANFL SALARY CAP.
The SANFL is a stand alone competition, it has its own rules that clubs must abide by, break them and you will be penalised. How can Norwood or West get fined for salary cap breaches but not Port Magpies?
This alone should be enough.

Re: AFL Reserves Discussion...

I think the consensus from real football fans on this site is that while NO AFL IN THE SANFL would be preferable, having AFL teams in the SANFL Reserves would not be the end of the world.

While I don't have any problems with AFL Reserves teams in the SANFL Reserves per se, I see two potential problems arising from it:

1) After a couple of years the Crows and Power teams try to force themselves into the League competition, citing Woodville and Central moving in to the league competition after a few years. Letting them get a foot in the door may be regretted at a later time. It has taken 23 years for the Crows to demand entrance into the SANFL. Doubtless they will bide their time if admitted to the Reserves before trying to get into the League competition.

2) The already scarce coverage of the SANFL may make way for coverage of the SANFL Reserves (i.e. just the Crows and Power Reserves teams) in the paper and on the TV news etc. What's more, the broader public knowledge of the SANFL (which obviously is already much diminished on what it was twenty years ago) will now relate solely to the Reserves. The Crows may win the Reserves competition and most of the general sporting public will think they've won the league. Media like Channel 7 will be happy to let coverage of the SANFL League competition disappear.

While it is no certainty that this will occur, the effect it will have on the SANFL if it happens is too dire. It is not worth the risk for no benefit in return. Those, like me, who would totally walk away from the SANFL if it allowed AFL Reserves teams into the League competition, should bear these things in mind.

The word compromise has come up a lot in this debate. IMO the SANFL has already compromised enough. The SANFL needn't, and shouldn't, compromise.

Good post, makes good sense. Understand the concerns, that's why I am suggesting that Crows and Port have reserves teams outside the SANFL

But if we allow them to play in the League Comp there might be some "renewed" interest in the SANFL via the main stream media (MMM, 5AA, Tiser, Channels 7, 9 and 10) you can bet all the focus will be on the PAFC and Crows teams to the point it will appear to be a 2 team comp. At least with them in the Reserves Comp how much real interest will the main stream media have in reporting their games against other Reserves teams at 11.30 on a Saturday once the novelty wears off?

RB I accept you points

but

Once licences sold Crows and Power want their own teams ... it's their players so I accept they have a say on whether it's as one reserves team or spread far & wide.

However they then need to find a competition to play them in and need to negotiate an agreement with that competition to participate in it.

Whatever competition they are in it is going to draw mainstream media coverage away from the SANFL league.

SANFL reserves will probably have the least media effect of any of their options.

Looking Forward

With Adelaide Oval a new novelty and high likelyhood of AFL reserves playing somewhere the pressure will be on the SANFL and their clubs to make the local league a marketable and relevant product in the new era.

Personally i dont think main stream media is no where near as important as it once was.

With modern technology the SANFL and the 8 clubs are able to hit their demorgraphic directly via websites/forums/emails/bulk sms/facebook/youtube/twitter etc etc. This also relates to the modern generation alot better as well.

I was speaking to my 13 year old brother the other day about this and he was saying he has never watched any of the 5-6 o'clock tv news. If he wants to find out any news he will go to direct news websites like adelaidenow, heraldsun, ninesmn etc etc.
