WHO WILL WALK IF - Crows/Port Reserves discussion

All discussions to do with the SANFL

Re: WHO WILL WALK IF

Look at the evolution of state league logos and Apachee is probably on the money.

I initially thought that the best solution would be AFL reserves sides in the SANFL reserves comp with Port having a shared Magpies / Power reserves team.

Keeps the SANFL league as a league comp, let the AFL clubs have their surplus players together if they must and allows for the Magpies to still exist to win premierships, not develop Power players.

As much as many of these "surplus" players only being at SANFL reserves level when they first start on an AFL list I cant see the Crows and Power going down this road given what the Eagles and Dockers have achieved in Perth.

That WAFL move is a game changer for mine ... and not for the better.

Crows & Power reserves in SANFL

Postby philcas » Sun Mar 17, 2013 2:07 pm

I am all in favour of Crows &Power reserves. On the proviso they play before Afl games. The members of each sanfl club playing are admitted free. Food & drink vouchers provided to members The gate takings are split evenly over the 3 clubs playing on the day.
Otherwise where will it help SANFL clubs. If the Afl clubs need it bad enough they need to pay for the privlidge.any other way is unacceptable
I think I am being quit fair The afl club fans can see there reserves each home game what do you think?

Another Port and Adelaide reserves teams thread, just what this site needs!

It's all Ports fault, they're sh!te, they don't return any money to the SANFL, the Crows don't care, it's all Andy Ds fault, Power supporters are front runners. Have I missed any of the main arguments? Yep I have, it's all Chands fault, and the SANFL don't care either charging $14 for entry.

Right this thread can be closed!
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

I can't think of any reason why the SANFL would want to have Crows and Power reserves teams in the competition.

If/when the SANFL finally betrays itself and the state and lets those AFL b***ards field reserves teams in its league competition, my love of not just our league but the sport will suffer a fatal blow.
The game will no longer be for the people but for the AFL's insatiable desire for money and domination at the expense of all others.
I may still go to some games but certainly none against AFL reserves teams.
Keep up the good fight people. Make lots of noise and tell all your club Presidents you don't want it.
We may just prolong the status quo a bit longer.

Great post.

Yep. Myself and rc aren't sponsoring this year unless the club can assure us there will be no afl reserves.

Us sad pathetic followers of a second rate suburban league do not deserve any better

Shame on our parents for raising us this way I say.

Sturt were a virtual ressies side thi year for the crows. Im sure they were trying to win games.

People are way over playing this. Players that arent good enough arent goong to be gifted games

It would be bad for the comp regardless of the teams' strengths.

For one, it would play havoc with the programming. Dedja mentioned this previously; more support staff etc would be required to cater for teams playing at different ovals.

Can we be guaranteed that each of the 8 real clubs would be drawn to play an equal number of games against the reserves teams? If not, then the fixture is not unbiased.

Commercial media coverage of SANFL games typically consists of sending a camera to a SANFL game to get a bit of footage of a fringe Crows/Power player for the news highlights, ignoring the rest of the game. It seems likely that commercial media coverage will swing behind the two AFL reserves teams, giving heavily distorted perspective on the league.

There was a time when all Victorian AFL teams had reserves. The concept fell out of favour and the reserves were disbanded. Now the worm has turned and reserves are thought more highly of. It would be reasonable to assume that at some time in the future the concept of reserves will again fall out of favour. What will happen to the SANFL then?

The above issues are serious, and have nothing to do with the relative strengths of the AFL teams. Being too strong or too weak simply exacerbates the problems of what is already a bad, bad idea. Keep AFL rubbish of our league.

Id prefer a fully funded afl reserves comp, but even if that occurs, its going to cause havoc with the sanfl

I presume for this to get up then the SANFL clubs would have to vote for it? Is this correct?

If so I cant see any compelling argument that the 8 SANFL clubs would agree with?

also, just a small point. the crows and power having reserves sides does not actually solve their problem of getting game time into their players come finals time, unless the reserves sides make finals as well. i would have thought that to be guaranteed some of their players would have the chance to play finals (if they dont pull them from their sanfl side...) is better than a chance none of them will play if the ressie side doesnt make it.

meanwhile what would happen to their reserve sides if the league crows or power side dont make finals? they just stop the season then and there? as it stands as soon as the league side is finished they pull most of their players anyway, how would that work for the reserve side?
