Still believe that the picks go to SANFL clubs based on how many players that club contributes to the AFL draft. If two clubs contributed equally then the lower finishing club gets first pick. A club has the option of passing on the draft if they believe they have too many AFL listed players.
South contributed NOTHING to the the AFL draft yet they get two picks in the mini draft. Encourages mediocrity and penalizes hard work.

Sometimes, I think clubs and their supporters take too much credit for players getting drafted. Would be interesting to see which suburbs has the most kids being selected in the AFL draft. I'm guessing the older areas of Adelaide would dominate.

In the case of players getting a second crack at AFL I think the SANFL clubs deserve a fair bit of the credit.
Terlich was a completely differant player than when he first arrived at Norwood.
Even though Cachia was only here 1 season he left a better player than when he arrived.

Norwood were a basket case a few years back but instead of sitting on our arse and blaming everyone else we decided to do something about it. I can assure you there has been plenty of hard work that has gone on at Norwood to get where we are ATM. Seems like some clubs just want everything given to them on a platter

Apart from the freak of nature that saw Centrals dominate the premierships for more than a decade most clubs had a crack at the finals in a pretty even spread and apart from Central's dominance could have snuck a flag or two like the Eagles and Sturt did.

Well said said Jim05 agree 100% about time the Souths of this world got themself off the floor and not wait for others to do it for them.
Just watch how Eagles and Centrals react to last year's poor season. You can bet your arse they won't be waiting around for someone to help them !!!!!!!!!!

Ditto Daniel Currie. I think it has more to do with the greater opportunities a player gets to show his wares, than anything a SANFL club teaches them. Currie spent 5 years at Sydney and would have had plenty of coaching and development, but never got an opportunity in an AFL game.

Should North be compensated with an extra mini draft pick? No way.

A guy like Currie playing reserves in Sydney would not develop as quickly and as well as playing in the second best comp in the country.
Don't tell me North deserve no credit for his development ! The SANFL is the best place to develop players not quite up to AFL standard.

BTW I think Currie will develop into a very good AFL player.

Perhaps a fairer system is the one they adopted for a couple of seasons about 5 years ago where the selection order is a rolling list that continues from year-to-year. So for example, next season Centrals will have the first selection (as they were the next team in line to choose), followed by North, West, Norwood, then back to Sturt, etc. That way over a long period of time, a team will have had the same number of selections (or one less) than every other team.

Out of interest, does anyone know how many selections each team has had at the mini-draft since its inception?

Wouldnt worry about the mini draft in the future - unlikely to be one in 2013 for the 2014 season- The AFL clubs wont have any players in the SANFL - we wont have the afl licenses and one day we can charge what ever we want for the afl cubs to use adelaide oval and their wont be footy park as a fall back - maybe we can get even with the afl in the distant future
