I suppose I'm just saying that of course we should be vigilant about actual threats to our competition, but not see threats where the don't exist.

Phil, there's a difference between Demetriou doing his job, which is AFL chief, and Demetriou being out to harm the SANFL. Whether we like it or not, he's been highly successful as AFL boss, so I don't believe he would have been a total failure if he wanted to destroy the SANFL.

I don't think he understands the SANFL, but doesn't care much, as long as we don't conflict too much with the AFL.

We've got stronger, our crowds are up, our footy is great to watch and the SANFL is financially strong.

I think this thread has shown there's very little harm done b the AFL to our comp.

Not through a lack of trying.

The reason i belive in "Hands of SANFL" is that currently the AFL is doing whatever makes them the biggest profit line. If that effects the SANFL, WAFL, VFL its a very small price to pay for AD ultimate goal.

Also here is a piece a poster on the CDFC website posted which i totally agree in.

"Hands Off Our SANFL" is for all those SANFL supporters who feel marginalised by the current media debate that is focussed on the AFL. It's an opportunity for the silent to have a say and to show their support for what they love. It's not an issue of opinion but rather the expression. One supporter may hate the AFL, another may hate journalists, another may hate changes to the rules, another may hate all three and then some. SANFL supporters have seen sacrifice and pain since 1991 and many expect more to come. They have been ignored/blamed/vilified via the attention directed towards their clubs. Now there are calls to kill off the SANFL thanks to the Adelaide Oval/AFL licences media circus. If that's not a threat to the SANFL I don't know what is.

This is about passion. I won't enter a debate about my motives. There is no logic in passion.

Bzzt - Wrong.

I agree with R&B...but I'm a Port supporter so I doubt you'll give any thought to my view. ;)

whufc, thanks for the more detailed response. I agree with the general tone of what you've quoted, but again it just says "there are calls to kill off the SANFL".

What calls??????

Again, it's just apprehension, not facts.

Thanks for your support, Booney :)

Pseudo, I don't mind if I'm in a minority, or alone, that doesn't necessarily make me wrong. You've had ample opportunity to put up a factual argument to prove me wrong, but IMO you've fallen well short.

However, I applaud your selflessness in standing up for your principles on this, leader ;)

TSG, sorry that your attention span is less than the other posters who seem to be able to debate the issue in more than one line, but thanks for your support :D

That makes 2 backing me up now.

PS: Thanks, Booney, it looks like I'm back to one :(

I take that back, TSG, you're my only friend, it seems ;)

redandblack, what evidence do you have that the AFL is not undermining the SANFL, or wouldn't be happy to see it go broke as Caroline Wilson said? :)

Surely R&B you would concede that the SANFL wouldnt have any kind of salary cap were it not for the wishes of the AFL?

In that way the SANFL comp has been directly restricted by the AFL, although whether that could be considered "damaged" might be a different argument all together.

Actually I don't necessarily agree with that one .. The SANFL has an obligation to best look after the welfare of all of it's clubs, and create a playing field as level as possible for all competing clubs.

Having no Salary Cap whatsoever would further increase the divide between rich and poor until eventually the poorer clubs became unviable and/or extinct.

Don't get me wrong, I think the AFL have had input on our Salary Cap for sure, but I think the SANFL wouldnt allow a cap-free comp anyway ... IIRC, back in the late 90's a Salary Cap was proposed and voted on by our clubs and it was almost a unanimous decision to implement one.

Influenced and damaged, two vastly different meanings. Well put.

I am with R&B, any negative sentiments on here are not backed up with any sort of factual evidence. Doesn't Rucci get bagged for that sort of writing?

Isn't it a fairly accepted fact that the AFL pressured the SANFL to halve its salary cap a few years back and when they resisted the AFL severely reduced the development money they give to state leagues? From where I'm sitting that's damaging enough and a fairly clear cut example of them attempting to weaken the league.

I was told this story by someone who, at the time anyway, would have know exactly what the story was.

I look forward to being told I'm wrong though. :D

My memory isn't that good JK but even if the cap was initially endorsed by the SANFL clubs I would be surprised if the majority of clubs were happy with the current amount they are limited to. I might be wrong however - maybe some others closer to their club could comment there?

Yeah I dunno mate, I don't have enough info to answer that one .. My guess would be that at least some of the clubs would be all for an increase in the cap sooner rather than later.

I was just referring to the option of no cap at all with that previous one.
