This was a win that should send a big message that West are a side to be reckoned with. The big proviso is that it probably needs close to its best team on the park to produce such a performance.
Anyone who was at Prospect yesterday knows that the 33 point margin flattered the Roosters on the day. West were strong at the footy, ran in numbers, had marking forwards and a strong, rebounding defence. It was one of those days where you didn’t think that North was particularly poor, but that West was very good and they controlled the match almost from start to finish. In patches, North looked dangerous, especially when they kicked 4 goals in about 5 minutes late in the third quarter, but this was more an aberration than a true reflection of the game.
The Bloods kicked into a strong cross-breeze in the first quarter, but dominated play totally, kicking 4.3 to nothing, until conceding a goal from a free-kick late in the quarter. That dominance generally continued for the rest of the game, interrupted only by that 4 goal burst and West managing 8 points in the last quarter.
There were a number of interesting outcomes. Although Ackland got his hand to the ball often, Ryan Willits’ ruck work was impressive. One piece of play resulted in perhaps the best goal I’ve seen for some years. Willits tapped the centre-bounce ball down an on-baller’s throat, he handpassed to a running wingman who kicked to a strong-marking Fort Caruso on 50. Caruso wheeled on to his left-foot and squared the ball 30 to 40 metres in front of a running Chris Schmidt who marked without breaking stride before punching through a great goal.
If you love SANFL, you would have loved this game, the second wonderful West v North game to watch this year at Prospect. There was plenty of skill and several fights. It’s fair to say Ben MacReadie is likely to miss a game or two and Messrs Birss and Delvins will nervously await the tribunal verdict. Each side will blame the other and Andy Collins says in today’s paper that Clint Alleway likes ‘wrestling’. Ryan Ferguson was awarded a free kick and took some time to clear his head from an apparent ‘knock’ from his immediate opponent. North fans will also be happy to relate misdemeanors by various West Adelaide players.
James Allan? Once again he had about 40 possessions, but very few hurt West, IMO. Many were deep in defence, but he had several inside-50 entries. I agree with those North fans who point out that deep in defence is where the ball was most of the time, so that’s where he was.
The key to West’s win was its defence. On paper, North had a strong forward line and West a strong defence. Gill, Stewart and Alleway took several marks, but many of them were from short leads outside 50. In the 1 on 1 contests, Silvester and an under-done Ferguson more than held their own. The rest of West’s defence was outstanding. The perhaps under-rated Kurt Thompson, Shannon Green and Daniel Caire provided run and rebound, while this season’s revelation, Steve Morris, had 27 possessions, 10 marks and continuous rebound off a back flank.
At the other end, North know they’re somewhat vulnerable, as they lack height. Early on, Brad Moran took advantage with some nice marks and Matt Lobbe later grabbed one in the goal square, but it was another under-rated player, Jonno Beech underlined his 5 goals against Williamstown with another 4 from a forward pocket.
This is obviously written from a West point of view, but although they were well beaten, you got the feeling that North aren’t far away and have the talent and a better game style to match it with anyone as they get more used to Josh Francou’s coaching.
Andrew Collins has gradually overcome most of West’s hoodoo grounds. Two wins in one season at Prospect is a wonderful result, but there are challenges ahead as West head to another hoodoo ground at Unley next week, having to possibly replace several players from yesterday’s side. The loss of the hard-at-it Nat Caruso is a big blow and we can only hope he recovers quickly.
In the seconds, North walloped West, going from 6 goals to 5 in the 2nd quarter, to kick 14 in a row and win by 20 goals to 6.
