HP

Interesting to see that Central yet again lost the hit out count, lost the clearances and inside 50's and the opposition had more scoring shots but the Dogs still won the game...

Not sure what to take out of that but no doubt something Roy Laird would look at as an area of improvement for the Dogs...

Solid win by the side today, breaking the Commander Centre Oval hoodoo in the process.

As expected, Sturt started out strong, and we struggled to deal with Sturt's rise in intensity. Our defence in particular was terrible (I think 4 of Sturt's first 5 goals came from our defensive blunders), Obst couldn't catch a cold, and we were lucky to be down by 2 goals at quarter time.

Normal service resumed in the second quarter as we mounted the comeback as players with poor first quarters, such as Sansbury and Obst, improved greatly. Sturt, to their credit, responded, but a late flurry from Havelberg saw Centrals enter half time in front. The third quarter started out with Sturt dominating, but became quite wasteful in front of goal. Centrals responded with 5 quick goals to race out to a 20 point 3 quarter time lead. The last quarter saw Centrals kick on, leading by 35 points at one stage as Sturt started playing for free kicks. A couple of consolation goals to Sturt and the margin ended up being 24 points.

All up it was a solid win. Sturt threw a challenge out to us and we responded and lifted to meet that challenge.

Nothing reported to the Sunday Mail journo post game...

Pretty certain no injuries for the Dogs reserves side as well...

Good to see Scott Dutschke at the game with his leg in plaster from thigh down and on crutches...

STURT
Having a bad season now, going that bad, could not beat their Unley Oval bunnies

TURNOVER ERRORS
I was concentrating most of the day, but could be a bit wrong
But heres what I saw
ST 12
CD 18
That is a rarity for the dogs to have more turnovers than the opposition
CD very sloppy particularly in the first half in defence, and near the midfield
CD were mostly very clean when going to the forwards
ST were usually good with thier skills today

UMPIRES DECISIONS
Just the way i saw the decisions
Counted about 8-5 in CD favour
Not a great discrepancy, but CD scored 4 goals from Umpiring decisions, from various parts of the ground
ST benefitted for 1 goal from umpiring decisions
Based on what I saw, CD got the advantages
Late in the day Pumpa almost crippled Crane on the wing
Im stunned how there was no free kick paid for that one

HIGHLIGHT
OBST kicked the ball as long as Ive seen in the SANFL for a long time
Some of his drop punt bombs were massive

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
$5 to sit in the stand is always worth it
$13-00 for 2 cans of West End Beer is ...

TRIVIA
HALF TIME SCORE
ST 6-5
CD 7-4
Dogs scored a goal after the siren
Ironically it was the 1st time for the day that CD led in this match

Another BOG for Thomas according to the SM. Would be close to Magarey favourite now given his season, not so much competition for votes as in the past and his history of polling well.

That incident with Pumpa and Crane on the wing, I'm not sure how you say he nearly crippled him, Mal. It was just a clipped heel (which is why Crane's boot came off) and barely at that.

I am interested to note people saying Gum, Sheedy and Crane had good games. In the last quarter I actually thought to myself how quiet they'd been compared to usual. I do tend to watch the Centrals players far more, no doubt, but still I do see some of the opposition players some of the time. I'll be interested to see how much of the ball they did win when I read the paper tomorrow.

A couple of bad kicking errors from Eddie Sansbury early cost us goals, but I thought he played well despite that, Pupma was good down back after 1/4 time.

As usual a top game by Thommo, and I thought Jenner and Chris Gowans were usefull. The big tank for Sturt did well with his 5 goals, and Alan Obst really came into the game after 1/2 time, and the Burger was good too.

Sturt tried hard after 1/4 time once we began to hit a few gears, but we seemed to be in control.

Let's face it, just about ANYWHERE on Unley Oval you can kick goals from!

At 1/4 time Pumpa spent nearly the whole break aside with Johnny Platten, at the time we thought the only thing those two would have in common was their shampoo and conditioner. Obviously not Sutherland played a blinder after that.

I think Platts is the Dogs 'midfield' line coach...

HOORAY PUNT wrote:I thought Sutherland dropping back into the backlines changed the game . That was halfway through the 2nd and things slowly turned from there. Sturt put Central under a lot of pressure early and deserved their lead but then Sturts skills fell away which is how Central gained momentum . Sturt missed too many achieveable goals to keep close and against a top side you must take them .A bit baffling the 25m penalty and the holding the ball rule , well our umpires have no idea. Umpiring is sub standardand laughable at times. In the 1st Quarter a Central player was called to play on after receiving the ball back from the Sturt player , he must have had the ball in his hands for 2 seconds and hardly moved and then was told to play on and resulted in a Sturt goal .A pretty good game really.

He was doing it from the opening bounce, only thing being in the first quarter he looked like he had never played that role before and was running around in circles.

But yes he was very effective from quarter time onwards.

And for some reason we kept bombing it straight on top of his head for the rest of the game. Probably would have helped warm to the role.
