What does that actually mean? Did something happen in 1946?
Norwood defeated Port in the GF that year. There are stories of great adversity in that year, but P Dalwood was the leading goalkicker, and Ivan Holliday was BOG in the GF. (Ivan died in February this year). Jack Oatey apparently used to say that the 1946 team was the best he was involved with so it must have been special! I'm sure Adelaide Hawk can add more.
For interests sake the preceding lines in the second verse reference 1929 - another premiership year, saying
"well the team played fine
in the year twenty-nine.
The Redlegs that no one could lick, lick lick"
(then)
"From the crowd's first yell
to the final bell
the Spirit of ol' forty six, six, six".

Squawk - do you have the full lyrics to that other song that refers to the Spriit? What's the history of it? Who wrote it?
it is, it's the 2nd verse.

Hang on a minute, "the Spirit of ol' forty, 6,6,6"
I think we're onto something here.
Secret codes, inner sanctum, the red hat brigade, 666.

What, adapting the names to the tune of Yankee Doodle Dandee? Don't think they would have an issue with it.

As Hawthorns first ever premiership captain said to me last year, they owe us a fair bit, so I'm sure it wouldn't bother them.
FWIW though I'd be fairly confident in saying some other footy clubs around Australia would have used the song before Hawthorn.

G'day Centurian, I refer to 12th post page 1 of this topic, still applies, even though and I respect your right to your opinion, you thought it silly and childish![]()
Cheers and have a coldie for me,
