Ah - there you go.

I thought Moorook-Kingston's version of Grand Ol' Flag was exactly the same as Norwood's, as it was inherited from former Redleg Harley Swanbury when he was coach of the club.

What does that actually mean? Did something happen in 1946?

Norwood defeated Port in the GF that year. There are stories of great adversity in that year, but P Dalwood was the leading goalkicker, and Ivan Holliday was BOG in the GF. (Ivan died in February this year). Jack Oatey apparently used to say that the 1946 team was the best he was involved with so it must have been special! I'm sure Adelaide Hawk can add more.

For interests sake the preceding lines in the second verse reference 1929 - another premiership year, saying

"well the team played fine
in the year twenty-nine.
The Redlegs that no one could lick, lick lick"
(then)
"From the crowd's first yell
to the final bell
the Spirit of ol' forty six, six, six".

Hang on a minute, "the Spirit of ol' forty, 6,6,6"
I think we're onto something here.

Squawk - do you have the full lyrics to that other song that refers to the Spriit? What's the history of it? Who wrote it?

it is, it's the 2nd verse.

Correct - the verse I typed out was the majority of the second verse of "It's a Grand Old Flag". Although other clubs have a similar version of the first verse, we have a second verse that refers directly to past feats. I'm not sure if other clubs using a similar song have a second verse or not.

I believe you added other verses after feeling guilty about pinching our song in the 1st place. ;)

Wonder what the Hawthorn Team think about the mob from Elizabeth Heights adopting their team song?

What, adapting the names to the tune of Yankee Doodle Dandee? Don't think they would have an issue with it.

I wouldn't think they'd be too fussed.
I think the Knights Templar and Freemasons are keeping a close eye on Norwood's forum however.

I think they'd be flattered that the CDFC recognised one of the club's legends by appropriating a song which he sung with so much gusto during a high profile and successful VFL/AFL career.

As Hawthorns first ever premiership captain said to me last year, they owe us a fair bit, so I'm sure it wouldn't bother them.

FWIW though I'd be fairly confident in saying some other footy clubs around Australia would have used the song before Hawthorn.

Just watched the replay for the 1st time since the match, what I want to know is this. Near the end of the game, when Norwood were coming back again, why didn't the MONSFAW chant get used? I thought it was to be used to inspire the boys & hopefully get them over the line?
