He said Glenelg were united and he felt supported by the board.

He's in trouble....

true, they did have some one better but he will still be coaching this weekend.

Spot on totally agree

So in late July last year when Mickan was given a two year extension - when he had the league team on top of the table and had just played in a GF he should of been replaced by a coach who at that stage had his team battling to make the five and had finsihed 3rd the year before. Pretty couragous board to do that - despite it being known to all at Glenelg that Godsy was a senior coach in waiting.

Now it could be argued the board could have waited until the end of the season but in doing that it could risk losing its senior coach to better offers if it wanted to wait until after the 2009 GF. Remember Noble got a better offer whilst still contracted to the Bays - how would the board have looked if it ran the risk of losing it's best coach in 20 years and 2nd coach in three to a better offer??

Gee the field day the punters on here would've had if it cam to pass in July last year we didn't want to renew our coach's contract given our history of managing coaches.

And for the record and to be pedantic Goddsy was signed and sealed with Southern Districts in the NTFL so we already knew we were going to lose him by Mid August, So he actually came to the Eagles from the NTFL crocodiles not the SANFL Tigers ;)
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

I agree that Basset will win but I thought with all the issues, Tony Bamford did a fantastic job (cannot believe I am giving Port some credit). That were competitive in almost all games they played.

I know it is an old argument, but surely coach of the year should go to the Premiership coach...

So it's either Godden, Bassett or Laird, all of which would be worthy recipients IMHO...

I'd keep Rubbers ... The challenging part of doing so though, could be some tough calls that need to be made on personnel (some of which might be fan favourites) if he believes they aren't up to providing what's required at the end of the season.

His Minor records take care of itself and possibly still has enough credits in the bank for the turn around he's made at the club, which is a very significant turn around.

I'd give him until the end of his contract, else run the risk of instability which can be cancerous to footy clubs.

One thing I think Collingwood did well was stick with Tony Shaw until they had someone better to take over. The stability of that I think helped them enormously to build up their strength off field which is now moving on field as well. And now all the players want to go there to play.

Having said that I've got that old familiar feeling Mickan is going. Not often the talk builds and builds like this and the coach survives.

Agree (as it's getting quite humorous). But seriously, I agree with CP.
