For somebody who believes that a piece of wafer biscuit magically becomes the actual flesh and blood of a bloke who was his own father and walked the earth three days after dying, I'm sure that a ban on beef products on one specific day of the year makes perfect sense.
Poor comment!
I think a respect needs to be shown to those who have religious beliefs, regardless of what the religion is. This is a public forum, with readers and posters from a diverse range of cultural and religious backgrounds.

The discussion is about whether footy should be played on Good Friday. Derogatory comments regarding religion, culture and race is best kept to yourselves IMO.

It's hard to respect people who just make stuff up, but as long as they leave me alone they can do whatever.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

So your telling me that players representing or have represented the Sturt Football Club with Catholic beliefs you dont respect?

This is the problem with Aussie Rules. Its no wonder why some choose to persue other sports.

Then in turn allow those with no religious beliefs to pursue recreational and dietary satisfaction if and when they choose to, not because someone else is against it.

Im not against religion, I choose not to embrace it. Those who do choose to embrace it could stay home from the footy and eat fish and celebrate whatever-it-is that makes Easter the event that it is.

Guys we've done the religious debate before in the GD forum. If you want to discuss it further bump that topic otherwise leave this one for discussion about footy please. Any further religious debates on this topic will be removed.
Does anyone know how other sports such as the NRL get around catering issues?

Yeah, they offer a couple of loaves and a basket of fish to the Lord, and it magically feeds a whole crowd!

Exactly right! I agree!

Its up to the individual. People involved in footy make compromises to attend on any day, let alone Good Friday. If footy on this day is to happen perhaps the same compromises can be met.

My issue is with Psuedo's comment. Just because you don't follow the religious beliefs of any group of people, doesnt mean you can make derogatory comments about it.

You're assuming though that the NRL can pull a crowd of 4-5000 :D

FWIW, I have no problem with football being played on a Good Friday. Normally Good Friday services finish by mid-morning, leaving the rest of the day to sit around and do nothing. Thankfully my church did the opposite this year and started their service at 5pm - meaning I got a sleep in, a nice relaxing day, then a casual trek down to the church. A football match would be something great to do on Good Friday.

As somebody who spent more than two decades labouring under the yoke of catholicism I think I am well qualified to say what I like about that particular religion.

I agree with Dawkins: Labelling a belief as "religious" does not shield it from scrutiny. Suggesting that all people should avoid football on Good Friday because of one's personal belief is the height of arrogance. I will not withhold my contempt for this attitude on the grounds of religious sensitivity. I will hold respect for a person because A) they merit it, and B) they would not deny me the same - and not because they demand some religious right to it.

PS - Good work Wedgie 8)

Perhaps half-time could be someone with "a couple of loaves and a basket of fish" make their way around the oval and feed us all? ;)

I thought Barrie did that during the 1972 Champions of Australia match against Carlton. If he didn't it was the only miracle he didn't perform that day.

Disagree Pseudo with your justification, but I'll let it go.

I'd actually prefer no footy on Easter Sunday than Good Friday. Family commitments sees me never to attend a footy game on Easter Sunday ever again.

This got me thinking.
Hypothetically, if football season was over summer, would everyone's attitude be the same for footy on Christmas Day?

Incredible as it now seems, Adelaide used to host cricket matches on Xmas Day up until the 1969-70 season. A couple of times test matches were held on Xmas Day. Remember this was over 40 years ago when Adelaide was a lot more religious and conservative a place than it is now.
