how can the standard dropping effect different clubs in different ways? if anything the standard supposedly dropping, causing less quality players to be availabls should make it harder for a club to maintain such a high consistency. it may make it easier to "jag" a lucky premiership if all of the good players end up in the one place at the one time, but to make it to the last game for ten years straight is not lucky. it is making the best of what is available.

every year centrals lose players form their premiership side, and replace them with mostly home grown players (and a select few targeted from elsewhere) yet they maintain their high standards. personally i think people that try to de value their dominance with the "diminished standard" defence is clutching at straws.

Ps, i do hate you guys(meaning centrals), but i do admire the achievent, and no one will ever be able to take it away from you.......bastards!! ;)

Very well said tipper :ymapplause:

I am also not convinced that the standard has actually dropped, the above was based on the assumption that it had.

in reality we may not have the same number of "the best players" as they are in the afl, but i would be willing to bet that todays fringe players are at a higher standard than in years gone by. Sanfl is virtually a full time commitment nowadays when you include the training, weights and fitness sessions that are a compulsory part of playing. no longer do you see players having a smoke in the huddle during the game etc. the sanfl has never been more proffessional.

In reality all of the nine clubs are playing in the same league, in the same city.regardless of the percieved "standard". arguments can be made for it being higher or lower, it is like the who is the better player argument when comparing players form different eras, the argument will never be settled.(unless someone is being compared to Barry Robran, he always wins that one ;) )

it isnt as if centrals play against teams that the rest dont. we have all had our chance to step up and end their dominance, off the top of my head, over the last 10 years i reckon every team has played at least one final, but only 2 sides have beaten them when i counted, but they still bounced back.

it is up to the rest of the clubs to raise their standards above that of the dogs and put them back in their kennel. i dont think they plan on changing their ways, and why would they? i know for a fact if it was north with 8 from 10 i wouldnt be saying how about we let someone else have a go this year

hehehe but you didnt you could only win flags when the SANFL is really not the SANFL anymore meaning standard of competiton etc etc etc :D

Obviously the pinnacle of football was in the late 19th century and flags won in 1897 mean so much more than 2007.

I think doggie supporters should just enjoy their success (you cant go back in time well not yet anyway) and trying to compare to previous eras is rather pointless as its an argument you just cant win.

its a fact the standard of the SANFL now does not compare to previous decades but thats not centrals fault and they should just enjoy dominating the competition. At this stage I cant see them falling off the wagon for awhile. :)

I don't think the standard has necessarily improved or fallen, but it has CHANGED.

There would be less individually talented stars running around the SANFL today, because the minute they show enough they're off to the big stage, whereas in the past (take the 80's for example with Bradley, Platten, Kernahan, Motley etc) you had players who could more than hold their own at any level of competition.

On the flipside though, the levels of fitness are miles above pre-Crows days, as are facilities, as are the tactics and style of football through the natural evolution at the highest level which filters down through lesser competitions.

The whole argument is pointless anyway because one thing has not changed - At the end of every season 1 team has been better than all others according to the criteria that all participants must compete by, meaning the value placed on being the best team over the course of a season should be the same now as it was in 1909.

IMHO of course.

agreed cp.... the game has changed a huge amount as with anything that evolves..... the game is a lot quicker and skillfull now there fore the fitness levels of players are up, and the venues of clubs are changeing pretty soon we could see all the sanfl clubs having lights to play night footy, etc but going back to the original topic i cant see a 3rd SA side in the afl wont happen we can barley have 2 look at the power they are struggleing on and off the field

I think you will find that because crowd numbers have fallen dramatically and not the standard of football there is a perception football is not the same anymore. I too have been watching football for 40 years and the crowd atmosphere is not there when we used to get 15,000 to 25,000 people at a local game. A lot of people have deserted the local comp to watch a more national marketable sanitised version.

As i said before the VFL has killed this comp just like in WA.

The SANFL "killed" the SANFL, not the VFL.

It was suicide.

Fear not, the SANFL has resurrected itself into a better being in some ways and a crappier one in other ways.

As someone else said, it's different.

The crowd numbers do make a difference to the "standard" of the game. There's been some shitty AFL games but when there's 70000 people screaming it makes a difference to the atmosphere.

How good was the atmosphere at this years SANFL grand final? But I'd be willing to bet there were many better games from a technical standpoint throughout the year.
