It's just a simple case that we the SANFL supporter are a small fish in a very small (and much loved ad appreciated) pond. We allowed the pond to shrink and live off the dividends of the bigger smelly artifical pond so really unless you took a stand against that then who gives a flying f*ck if only 24000 turn up to a GF? We sold out our league so 24 or 26K should be happily recieved.....

When I think about it, weren't Grand Finals in the 80s sold out before both teams were through?

Betcha all the Bay fans will disappear after they lose in the finals as usual... ;)

Nah mate, all is well. Not bad support for a team that hasn't won a flag in 23 years, hey?

One united, determined and financially stable club, with plenty of strong supporters ... and as an aside all grades with a strong chance to contest a GF this year.

Over to you Redlegs ... how's your club travelling?

Let's see how many of you would turn up if you had travelled the same 23 years.

Now let's get this topic back on track ...

Nope, I remember news reports stating the opposite - ie no direct telecasts until a sell-out. It always seemed to happen tho.

Well, it would have only been from what I've read on here or in my research anyway. ;) I'm sure 1989 was the fastest sold out GF, before the Preliminary.

Very hard to get GF tickets in the '80s ... had to line up for ages and from memory went on sale the Monday after the 2nd-semi.

IIRC sellouts would occur in the week before the GF ... I don't recall them being sold out before the Prelim though but that doesn't mean it may not have occurred.

Don't remember when I got our tickets for the '89 GF but in hindsight would have been better to stay home for that one ... missed North's only goal because of the rain too.

Wasn't that long ago that your lot were struggling to win a game. Seem to recall some small crowds at Bay games as well. What you have at the moment is a strong bandwagon. Glenelg will be back down the bottom soon. It's part of your culture. ;)

Incorrect, it was quite hard to get tickets, I only got tickets in 86 due to a pub group having some spare, and in 1989 I lined up for 7 hours on the first day they went on sale, supporters of 4 other clubs lined up with me that day to get tickets as they went on sale just before the finals started (rd who is a Sturt supporter and posts on this board occasionally will back me up on that as he too was in the line). Tickets in 89 sold out in the first day they went on sale which was before the Elimination final. 84 I couldn't get a ticket, 85 got some lining up in the first couple of hours they went on sale.
GFs were always live in the 80s as they were always sellouts.
Your memory is extremely flawed.

Probably thinking about the cricket. I think they wouldn't show any of the one dayers on TV unless all three were sold out, and there'd always be the West Indies vs New Zealand or somebody on the Saturday so there was no hope of that. I sometimes get my cricket/footy memories screwed up. Like when Rick Davies scored the fastest first class hundred ever in the Sheffield Shield vs Vic. So maybe Blue Girl has done the same thing.
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail

Look at the figures. You cannot argue with them........etc etc

Look at the reality not the perception.

YEAR SCORE MARGIN CROWD
2008 Central 17.10 (112) Glenelg 11.10 (76) 36 points 34,128
2007 Central 16.11 (107) North 5.12 (42) 65 points 30,478
2006 Eagles 17.19 (121) Central 7.3.(45) 76 points 25,130
2005 Central 15.14.(104) Eagles 11.10 (76) 28 points 28,637
2004 Central 23.15 (153) Eagles 4.4 (28) 125 points 24,207
2003 Central 17.9 (111) West 11.11 (77) 34 points 28,199
2002 Sturt 13.14 (92) Central 6.9 (45) 47 points 35,187
2001 Central 10.11 (71) Eagles 4.8 (32) 39 points 26,378
2000 Central 8.13 (61) Eagles 5.9 (39) 22 points 34,819
1999 Port 14.17 (101) Norwood 14.9 (93) 8 points 39,135 :)
1998 Port 11.9.75 Sturt 9.12 (66) 9 points 44,838
1997 Norwood 19.12 (126) Port 7.11 (53) 73 points 44,161
1996 Port 11.14 (80) Central 6.8 (44) 36 points 46,120
1995 Port 13.16 (94) Central 6.10 (46) 48 points 45,786
1994 Port 15.16 (106) Eagles 10.9 (69) 37 points 40,598
1993 Eagles 17.20 (122) Norwood 7.7 (49) 73 points 42,719
1992 Port 17.3 (105) Glenelg 7.7 (49) 56 points 42,242
1991 North 21.22 (146) West 11.7 (73) 73 points 39,276
1990 Port 16.12 (108) Glenelg 13.15 (93) 56 points 50,589

Wow, 3,948 difference between Norwood Port 1999 and Central Sturt 2002. 6,985 difference port/CD 96 and Port Port/Norwood 1999. One GF since 1990 Port V Glenelg has drawn more than Port/CD 96 or 95. Damn Statistics.

There were two Grand Finals in the early 1980s that were not sold out until just prior to the bounce. I think they were the 1982 and 1983 games. I think that they both "only" got 47,000 to the games. 1982 was a sellout in the end, but there seemed to be a lot of members missing (perhaps because it was the first grand final Port had missed for a while). In 1983 it was strongly rumoured that Channel seven bought the last 1,000 tickets so that it could telecast the game live. There were certainly more in the members in 1983 compared to 1982. All I could think there was that Port and Norwood played in the reserves and that some of the Port crowd in particular attended, whereas they didn't in 1982.

1992 was terrible terrible weather, besides Richmond last year it was easily the wettest I've ever been, 42k for a day that bad is bloody good!
In 95 and 96 there was more people at the game to see Port lose than either side win, we went home disappointed of course!

1992 was only terrible weather in the second half. Like so many spring days it started out as a very warm day with a srong northerly (remember Chalmers huge goal wih the wind just before half time). The weather only became terrible after half time. Because the day started out fine, I doubt that the weather had any impact on the crowd at all.

Must have been something else falling on me in in the 2nd qurter then. The reserves was in sunshine, as the league game started in came the clouds, halfway through the 2nd quarter in came the rain, last half it belted down ...

Buckley's one grab mark over Gary Christie in the 3rd quarter as it belted down was a classic
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

I think there has been only two Grand Finals since 1991 that have had rain during the morning of the Grand Final - 1994 and 2000.
