Budgeting to operate on a budget of 1.3-1.5 Mill, that's not a recipie for long term survival.

Shared services are OK when you have one funding source, e.g. governamnt departments all get their money from the Treasurey so it is easy to say you will use these common services.

However when you have multiple sources of revenue: match receipts, catering sales, SANFL dividends, pokie revenue, and membership and sponsorship, to have a shared service for IT, websites, book-keeping etc that opens up a whole new can of worms for who derserves the service when, where and how.

Agreed the option needs to be explored but can't see it working.

Can someone more enlightened than me make some sort of comparison of a SANFL club to a top amateur or country club in terms of structure and finances?

Well what we need is someone on here linked to an amateur club to post what theire annual turnover or profit and loss is, Fourth Estate to thread Fourth Estate to thread

AFL clubs average $40 Mill to run (yes some T/O >$50 Mill, others struggle to turnover $30 Mill) SANFL clubs turnover at least $2.0 Mill. I too wonder what SAAFL Div 1 clubs turnover.

Depends on which club and the makeup of their social club (ie) bar and pokies, but probably around $200k - $400k

Really? Who would have thought. Thanks for the insight.

Sturt have made bad decisions sure (plenty), but we have been near broke for decades now too. What we have achieved is fantastic given our resources, yet, we could have done a lot better. So could have at least 1/2 of the other clubs.

Sure it would have been nice to have been smart enough to get in on the pokies bandwagon faster and more effectively. No amount of skillful management decades ago would have predicted that the SANFL would be funded by the expanded VFL and a bunch of machines that rip money straight from stupid people in the community (with all respect to the minority who play what they can afford).

Sturt have mis-managed shockingly their gaming potential for a long long time and are back to 20 years ago when they were rock bottom. That's the MAIN stuff up!
The clubs that set up and manage their gaming potential have ground out a tough but surviving position :o
Forget the AFL blame game etc. Sturt, West and Port have made the worst off field decisions, or lack of decisions, and will pay a price going forward.
Unlike the AFL where teams must use 90% of their cap up, SANFL clubs have no such restrictions so I'd expect Sturt to start there with playing kids.
That rent for Bazaar really must have been BAZAAR

Was there anything mentioned at yhe AGM about the cost of erecting that temporary fence every game at Unley? I heard they usually lose money at home games because we need about 3,000 to 5,000 (forget exact figure) to turn up just to pay for the fence.

Not really. John Halbert commented that it probably costs us too much, but it was part of a speech about having to take drastic action and change the way we run the club, so it wasn't a topic in itself.

I'd have thought it was a major issue. It basically wipes out match day profits and it's an expense no other club has on its books.
Deduct the cost of that fence from Sturt's expenses and how would our books look then?

Match day profits must be a piddling amount for most clubs these days. Once the wages of staff and the cost of clean-up etc is taken into account I imagine most clubs would be happy to break even with an avaerage crowd of 3,000.

One mistake I'll certainly agree that they made was WHERE they set up their pokies.

They don't seem to work in more affluent areas where the people - with all respect - are a bit smarter.

Gate takings have been a drop in the ocean in regards to club income for years.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

So why not let the public in for free, saving on the cost of staff and fencing at Sturt and then pursue the sponsor $s based on the oncreased crowds?
