Yes, you'd think by now people would have woken to the fact that umpires ostensibly give votes to running midfielders with high possession numbers.

Didn't seem to bother us too much in 87 when we had the Magarey Medalist and Leading Goalkicker.

I wonder if the game has changed over 23 years? :?

But your eg was from 26 years ago! :?
So the game now is like 1984 but not like 1987? :?
Makes no difference at any time ever if the player is good enough.

Not sure who won it in 1987, my list here has an asterisk.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

That's rocket science that noones ever worked out before in the history of the Magarey and Brownlow and most awards around the world!

I assume that the you refer to is your team - as the votes per team are roughly equivalent to the premiership table. The top 3 teams Norwood, Central and Glenelg all had multiple players receiving high numbers of votes while North while scoring 53 team votes (the top 3 got about 80) had 1 player take out 22.

So the medal is tending to go to a player who plays in a team where his team mates will not take votes away.

Wasn't too much of an issue in 2004 when Paul Thomas won the Magarey, Daniel Schell won the Ken Farmer and the Dogs went on to record a record winning margin in a GF !!!

One anomaly that stood out to me was Travis Ronaldson getting 3 votes for West in the round one game. Very strange seeing as he spent half the game on the bench. He had 8 kicks, 3 marks and 3 handballs and while he rucked well, both Lobbe and O'Hara won more hit outs. Makes you wonder what criteria they're using.

Allan = ok footballer

Medals such as Magareys and Brownlows are very poor indicators of which players have the most influence on games. These medals such just be called the leather poisoning medals.

Give me a Ty Allen, Paul Thomas, Ian Callinan, Nick Lower any day of the week.

LOL - got you admitting Jimmy is ok now!

However you may need to delete your second point - way too a general statement to make because clearly you never Robran or Ebert play then?

I have to agree that they are very poor indicators. If they were true indicators Allan would have won the last 4 medals, just as he has won the last 4 R O Shearman medals as voted by the 200 club members.

Yeah probably is abit general those two blokes are absolute legends of the game

My point is have you ever seen Allan tear a game apart like Callinan did against North in the GF.

The fact that Central have never bothered to tag Allan is an indicator that the best coach in SA doesnt think he has a huge influence on games. Very similar to Ciccolella (except he tore us a new one in the 2006 GF) gets lots of possesions but overall isnt extremley damaging.

I know as fact that in the 2008 season when the Dogs played North they were alot more worried about Chris Ladhams having 10 possesions than James Allan having 30.

imho the best 3 midfielders in the last 5 years are Callinan, Clayton and T.Allen

When you make so many bulldog2004 they all start to blur into one big decade of drunkness. Come on you should know that ;)

The 200 club do that for the R O Shearman medal, and interestingly Jimmy Allan has won that award for the last 4 years.

Probably understandable. I'd imagine he's been Norths best player for the last 4 years.

The point is if we followed Centurion's idea, Jimmy would now be a four time Magarey Medallist!!!!
