I know I certainly was. Knowing that it was the last time I would have to watch some of my players playing against my club brought a tear to my eye.

From memory it was joy.

I find your mocking of booney and other port magpies supporters for getting emotional at Port magpies being destroyed in poor taste.

I thought you blokes were One Club

For once Beeny might just be right, nothing to get tearful about, the magpies will be playing next year and the year after etc etc That's what KT and Kochy have told you, blindly believe them and you'll be fine

Well someone told me we'd signed a 15 year agreement with the $ANFL. I guess the Magpies will be kicking your collectives for a while yet.

Why argue with this guy?

You'd get more sense and intelligence out of the more rabid of the Rev Jim Jones disciples.
'People are not stupid. They know when they are being conned. And two reserves teams operating in a League competition will reduce it to a farce, a competition without a soul.'

The last 15 years has seen the Magpies win 2 Premierships, so your point is.....?

You lot are just so hung up on the last decade. But over 143 years, it's just a drop in the ocean.

Centrals thought they could simply emulate the Port Adelaide template to create sustained success. But like a cheap copy watch, it hasn't gone the distance, while the genuine Rolex, while a little tarnished, keeps ticking along.

How many Port people will actually go and watch the token Magpies, the zombie outfit that insultingly is going to wear the famous prison bar guernsey, particularly when mid this year Keith Thomas publicly said that this kind of tokenism was just not Port Adelaide?

The true Magpie supporters in truth were too few in number to stop this farce from happening, they were always going to be patted on the head and sent on their way, killed off for the sake of the rest of the family. Years from now the anguish of these people will be largely forgotten, that' just the way it is, the mob have largely been placated, swallowing the nonsense fed to them by Thomas etc. The art of declaring victory out of defeat has been mastered down Alberton way.

And in its first 50 years, Port Adelaide won 10 Premierships. And that was when the $ANFL was the pinnacle competition in this state.

"MY CLUB has broken up with me."

The poignant lament came from a fan when his club voted to allow AFL teams into the SANFL.

The comment was typical of those posted on a sa.footy.net topic that at press time was approaching 6000 posts.

Others felt "sick and numb'', "gutted'' and "betrayed''.

In some quarters SANFL fans have been referred to as "diehards'', as if the SANFL is anachronistic.

How dare the "diehards'' stand in the way of progress?

Well change for change's sake is not necessarily progress. The SANFL fans - the so-called diehards - know a raw deal when they see one.

They are told the AFL sides will prop up flagging crowds. Well the only flagging crowds are in the AFL. The two Adelaide clubs have recorded long-term declines in crowds, while the SANFL figures remain comparatively steady.

Yes, the SANFL crowds have been down this year.

But that is down to the wet winter, admission hikes and because the league has scant money for marketing.

The "diehards'' know the AFL sides will compromise the competition by diluting the talent pool. The so-called "top-up players'' will pit amateur league stand-ins against professionals on $300,000 a year.

The AFL franchises will sap local clubs of volunteers and sponsors when they are already struggling for both.

When young Jimmy and Jane are given a choice of a South or Crows guernsey by their parents, which one do you think they will choose?

Presently the AFL dominates football, but there is room to follow an AFL and SANFL side.

Under the new regime the AFL will be actively competing against the local product.

The SANFL has made a success out of promoting its league as hyper local through its "Your Tribe is Calling'' campaign.

Smell the barbie, kick the footy at the breaks, a beer on the mound with your mates - the SANFL IS community.

An old military dictum states that generals should reinforce their strengths, not their weaknesses. By allowing Big Football to muscle in on its turf, the SANFL is imperilling its grass roots.

A healthy SANFL equals a healthy AFL, but the reverse is not necessarily true.

Good one Dutchy, read that today in the Messenger Press. Great article by Andrew Faulkner.
Dion Hayman's article on the AFL Reserves in the SANFL earlier this year was spot on: 'People are not stupid. They know when they are being conned'.

There are media voices out there opposed to this disgraceful decision like Hayman, Faulkner and even Rucci,

How do we harness them?
