Some of the main concerns people have with this concept revolve around:
1) AFL teams being too strong
2) AFL teams being too weak
3) AFL teams resting players at the end of the season, making an AFL team in finals a farce
4) Having our season shortened and therefore competing with AFL finals, Ammos etc when previously we've at least had GF week on its own
There has been talk of an 18 round h&a season with everyone playing each other twice.
I would have a 22 round season, including a state game and with three split rounds (June/July/August when the weather is crap).
The season starts March 21st - the same week Crows and Power play their Round 1 game.
The minor round finishes September 12th - the weekend of the AFL Semi Finals.
Crows play 4 SANFL teams 3 times and Port play the other 4 SANFL teams 3 times - swapped over each year. One of the 3 games played against an AFL club is fixtured in the SANFL clubs country zone, therefore every SANFL team gets a game in it's country zone against an AFL team each season.
The Crows and Power are drawn to play the lowest teams in the final 2 rounds of the season, as that is likely when they'll be at their weakest.
The AFL teams only compete for the minor premiership. They know exactly how long their season will be - hopefully not too long for the Campbell Heath's of this world.
The SANFL finals are a top 4 (the top 4 SANFL teams) over 3 weeks. Semi Finals x 2 (at suburban ground), Prelim Final (at suburban ground), Grand Final still on October Long Weekend at Adelaide Oval.
Sorry, there is no solution with regards to the integrity of the whole competition thing when the AFL teams are playing. But perhaps this is a reasonable scenario for all involved (except those Port supporters who actually believe they will be fair dinkum at SANFL level).
